If it weren't for Ari (and some gratuitous nudity), that show might have been unwatchable.

I like Howie, but yeesh, that was one awful FA signing.

I see euphoria has broken out over this trade. If Huff was so bad last year, how was Howie able to trade him for a return, and get cap space back? Is he some sort of wizard?

His wizard sleeve is the shaggiest of them all.

I may be the only one who thinks Huff could help the Eagles as a situational passs rusher with his hand in the dirt. He has a good win rate plus if you watchedf all of his snaps he can put pressure on the QB. He will never even come close to the value of his contract but that doesn't mean he couldn't help.

Huff was objectively awful last year. He had just 2.5 sacks in 12 games, was a liability against the run, and was a healthy scratch for the SB.

That said, he had a successful year with the Jets under Robert Saleh and will now reunite with him in San Fran. That connection is probably the only thing that salvaged a bit of trade value. I know it's being reported as a "mid-round pick" but I'd be surprised if it were any higher than a 5th. Hell, I'd be surprised if it were a 5th if I'm being honest. It'll probably wind up being some pick swap thing where we get as much as a 4th but have to give up a 5th in return or something.

Either way, yes, a little Howie wizardry was involved simply unloading this guy and not having to eat all of the contract.

I recall reading an article that said that most of his sacks (with the Jets) came in garbage time not at critical times when needed, this article also stated that this signing was a reach, I'd post the link if I could remember where and when I read that

I think it was more of a case that he got into Vic’s doghouse early on and the didn’t work his tail off to get out of it. It’s best for both parties that we move him.

Not that I was counting on Huff for much of anything in 2026 and this is obviously a good move for the birds. However, from a numbers perspective this leaves us kind of thin at edge rusher right now. Smith, Ojulari, Hunt, and Uche, that's it. I wouldn't be surprised to see them bring in Clowney or Smith at some point.

BG said that Huff's struggles came from moving to a 4-3 wide nine to a 3-4 defense.

Duh!

He's done this before. He got rid of Maxwell for something years ago. And that same offseason he got something for Murray, and let's not forget he got a first round pick for Bradford.

I bet Joe Douglas had a lot to do with this.... He has a relationship with Robert Salah from their tike together with the Jets

Any word on the pick yet?

"Mid round" I'm assuming means 4th or 5th?

I wonder if it's conditional?

Mathis, Johnson, and APR will also be competing for a roster spot as pass rushers. Also, Campbell could be moved around quite a bit --- especially once Dean is healthy. Some of our DTs are also capable of lining up at DE.

We have a very young group overall and it's hard to predict who will ultimately make the team until we see them perform in camp and preseason. In all honesty, I wouldn't be unhappy if Patrick Johnson made the 53 and if any of the rest of those guys beat him for that spot --- even better. I expect Smith to play over 70% of the snaps (probably 75%) and believe Hunt will play slightly over 50% (probably 55%). Campbell will probably replace Smith some of the time when Smith needs rest. Ojulari will likely rotate with Hunt. So out of the rest of them, we just need the winner(s) of the preseason competition.

Johnson is a special teamer. APR is a 6th round pick. Who in the blue hell even is Mathis. They are not deep at the position. This time last year they had Sweat, Huff (who they thought would be a double digit sack guy), Smith, BG, and Hunt. They were more proven and went five deep. I'd be very surprised if Howie is done adding here.

It's important for the depth to contribute to special teams. That's another reason why Huff is on the way out. Mathis is another STer, but somebody the Eagles had on the 53 since late November. They liked something about him and made sure to keep him after the season for a longer look. There's no reason why we should expect much from a guy like Mathis, but the Eagles liked him and want him to continue to compete for a role.

Last season, Smith was far from "proven" entering the season and Hunt was a raw prospect that contributed more as a rookie than fans generally expected. Your expectations for Huff didn't pan out last year. I'm in the same boat. There is no evidence to suggest moving him via a trade will make us a worse team. Heck, Patrick Johnson outplayed him in camp and preseason last year. If it wasn't for Huff's contract and expectations, Johnson would have been kept over Huff. We waived Johnson in September hoping to get him back on the PS, but the giants claimed him and kept him all year.

Sure, Howie may still add players at the position. I don't expect any "name" players to be added, though. Just prospects.

Patrick Johnson is also back and plays teams

Could be. Have to imagine that factored in. I think players will stick up for one another and kinda make excuses without mentioning other factors that would throw them under a bus. Gut says Huff didn't show a well rounded game (could rush the passer but was weak against the run) and wasn't buying into Vic and putting the time into improving that part of his game and that is what got him in Vic's doghouse. But that is just speculating on my part.

I think it was also his pass rush technique. Vic seemed to prefer a bull rush and a controlled rush lane.

I think you nailed it, it will probably be a 2027 conditional pick based on production that is maybe a 5th that can be a 4th. I guess we’ll find out after the 1st.

Yeah probably that too. It just has to be more than struggling from 4-3 to 3-4 as BG eluded to.

Any idea on compensation from SF?
