June 5Jun 5 Got to say I can’t believe we managed to trade him! And for not too bad a trade value either. All credit to this organisation for realising a mistake and correcting it.
June 5Jun 5 It's like a Christmas miracle that Howie was able to pull this off. The best thing Huffy contributed to this team was reworking his deal to facilitate his own removal. Good riddance.

June 10Jun 10 I hate the way salary cap ramifications of contracts are reported, so I tend to do my own analysis. For instance, whenever it is reported that the Eagles "saved" some amount against the salary cap, it is usually incredibly misleading. Below is my analysis for before and after the Huff amendment and trade.Eagles cap allocation for Huff contract (guaranteed money only): Before After2024: $ 4.350M $ 4.350M2025: $ 7.475M $ 4.935M2026: $ 22.175M* $ 16.765MTotal: $ 34.000M $ 26.050M* may have been spread over years after 2026 if the contract was played out. These numbers might be very slightly off (e.g., I am not 100% sure how the 2025 workout bonus allocation works), but if so, they are still awfully close. I welcome corrections and education if anything is wrong. The way I look at the Huff deal is the Eagles "saved" $7.95M against the salary cap because they got the 49ers to pay that amount that the Eagles had guaranteed Huff, of which about 2.5M was saved in 2025 and about 5.5M in 2026. They had agreed to pay Huff at least $34M guaranteed and ended up paying him $26.05M. Every dollar you pay has to hit the cap somehow, and it hits it now as shown in the "After" column above.Details below.Cap allocation under original contract (guaranteed money):2024 (actual): 2024 - New money (total = $17M): $ 15,625,000 signing bonus (for 2024 cap, * 1/5 = 3,125,000) $ 250,000 pre-paid 2024 workout bonus (for 2024 cap, * 1/5 = 50,000) $ 1,125,000 paid in 2024 salary (for 2024 cap = 1,125,000) 2024 - Other cap adjustments: Allocation of guaranteed 2025 workout bonus of $250,000 (for 2024 cap, * 1/5 = 50,000) 2024 - total actual cap hit = $4,350,0002025 (projected before amendment/trade): 2025 - New money (guaranteed = $17M): $ 15,625,000 in 2025 option bonus (for 2025 cap, *1/5 = 3,125,000) $ 1,125,000 in 2025 salary (for 2025 cap = 1,125,000) $ 250,000 in 2025 workout bonus (*1/5 = $50,000) 2025 - Other cap adjustments: Allocation of 2024 $250,000 workout bonus for 2025 = *1/5 of $250,000 = $50,000) Allocation of original signing bonus for 2025 (for 2025 cap, = *1/5 of bonus = $3,125,000) 2025 - total projected cap hit (before amendment/trade) = $7,475,0002026 and beyond: projected total cap hit: $34M paid - $4,350,000 2024 cap allocation - $7,475,000 2025 cap allocation = $22,175,000 - Everything in the contract after 2025 is irrelevant because there was no new guaranteed money.2025 amendment/trade:Instead of paying the $17M guaranteed in 2025, the Eagles and Huff executed an amendment under which they paid him a $9.050M amendment signing bonus, with $7.7M remaining in 2025 salary and a $250,000 workout bonus still required to be paid in 2025. That $7.95M will be paid by the 49ers (unless of course they trade him), so that $7.95M will not hit the Eagles salary cap.So the Eagles paid Huff a total of $17M + $9.05M = $26.05M, for one year of "work". With $4,350,000 applied to the cap in 2024, there remains $21,655,000 to be applied to the Eagles cap. Cap allocation after 2025 amendment/trade:2024 (actual) - same as previous2025 - New after amendment/trade: 2025 - New money ($9.05M paid): $ 9,050,000 in amendment signing bonus (for 2025 cap, *1/5 = 1,810,000) 2025 - other cap allocations/adjustments: Allocation of 2024 workout bonus of $250,000 (for 2025 cap, = *1/5 = $50,000) Allocation of original signing bonus for 2025 (for 2025 cap, *1/5 = 3,125,000) Adjustment for 2025 workout bonus allocated to cap in 2024, now to be paid by 49ers (for 2025 cap, = -$50k) 2025 actual cap hit = $4,935,0002026 - actual 2026 cap hit = $26.05M - $4,350,000 - $4,935,000 = $16.765M
