Actually, some of my A1 is real, just not the parts that make it an M16 (the lower and the fire control group). The upper, the furniture, the stock and the BCG are from a parts kit. The XM177E2 is 100% clone. I also had an M4 clone, but I wound up selling that to build the XM177E2. Come to think of it, I also sold an A2 upper assembly. I liked that rifle, but I never carried one and wanted a carbine version that matched the era of the A1. I'm not really 'into' the modern style ARs. Though I may end up getting an AR-10 at some point, but my M1A (dressed up in an M14 stock), kind of fills my .308 'need'. What about modern AR's don't you like?

But I'm more into military 'history', even if only through 'clones'. My brother (one of my brothers), is the opposite. He's more into the modern iterations. For me, I just love the feel of an A1 in my hands, but like I said, that's because I carried one in the Army, so that has a lot to do with that. The CAR-15 is just a rifle that I always thought was super cool looking when I was in my teens, and saw them in movies or whatnot. I bought the M4 because I wanted a carbine, but it just wasn't the carbine that I wanted. My brother also loves the latest/greatest pistols, while I love me a good 1911 lol. So for me, I'm just more into the military style rifles. I have an 1892 Krag, an 1873 Trapdoor and an M1, which are all genuine (though the M1 is from the CMP and is a re-build with a CMP stock... which I intend on replacing with a period correct stock at some point). Then I have my M1A, which represents an M14, and my AR clones. So you can see the 'service rifle' theme there lol. If I had the funds, I'd try to get as many service rifle examples as I could, going all the way back to the Revolution... which my grandfather had, but my uncle wound up getting it and selling it (after my grandfather passed away).

I cringed reading about the rifles being sold. It also pains me how many surplus rifles got sporterized. I'm more into the function over anything, but with the modern stuff you get a lot of guys getting Gucci gear just because and they shoot for ish. To me the best service rifle is the M1. When you compare to what peer militaries had in Mass when the M1 was adopted, it is clear that the M1 was revolutionary. Obviously some German small arms were very advanced, but not fielded en masse (similar to the repeater rifles that the Union fielded, a high volume of fire but not produced enough to make a difference), however US infantrymen went into combat with a very reliable weapon system that was very much ahead of what our allies or enemies had.

I actually only sold the upper assemblies (on Gunbroker), so they went to other enthusiasts. For the A2, the person that bought it told me that she planned to make wood furniture and a wood stock. I asked her to send me pics when she was finished, but I haven't ever gotten any. The M4 upper also went to an enthusiast, I want to say he was in Boston but I don't remember at the moment. I love my M1, I won't say that it's my favorite rifle, but it's one of my favorites. The receiver is Springfield, I want to say 1943 vintage... but again, my memory is also saying it might be 1944 vintage. The barrel is early 1950's, so potentially a Korean War barrel. As much as I like my AR's though, I think my M1A is my favorite. It's a sweet shooter, and I love the surplus M14 stock that I bought for it. It's a Springfield Armory stock, so it's fitting that the rifle itself is Springfield Armory (Inc). Not the 'real' Springfield Armory, but it's namesake.

Glock 19, Ruger 10/22, a couple other 9mm with a .380 pocket pistol thrown in so I can pretend to be James Bond. The Ruger is my favorite to shoot though and I want to get more into long range shooting. 500 to 1000 yards thereabout. What would you suggest for that?

What would you suggest for that? get a 308 and practice until youre goo at shooting 100. like 3 shot groups at a half an inch or less. having that mastered will go a long way once you step out to 300+. i say 308 cause its cheap and easy to find. i bought a 7mm mag a couple years ago with the same intent as you. i dont shoot it as much as i want because a box of cheap ammo is $25+. also, over spend on a good optic. even if you upgrade the rifle at some point, you can keep that optic.

Yeah, a lot of articles I've read emphasized not skimping on the scope so that makes sense. Been going back and forth between going with a 308 and .223/.556, but I think I'm gonna go this route. Thanks.

It's readily available, accurate, and there are plenty of rifles chambered for it. My 40 year old hunting rifle is a .308, and I've had no complaint with it.

Thanks. i originally went with an AR chambered in 223 when i wanted a long range gun. that was a failed venture and i really didnt know what i was doing when i put it together. learned from it though. if you get everything put together and want to start a shooting journal for the gun, i made some sheets up in photoshop a couple years ago. i can post em on here if you want. they were asking like 20 bucks for a journal online. a 3 dollar binder and 30 sheets of paper does just fine

May 5, 20205 yr I built an AR 10 in 6.5 Creedmoor and it's amazing. SOCOM has already ditched 308 for 6.5 Creedmoor https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2018/05/08/socom-snipers-will-ditch-their-bullets-for-this-new-round-next-year/
May 5, 20205 yr We got a .45 and a Mossberg shotgun. Took about 10 minutes. I didn't want either but with Trump fanning racist hate, Mrs TP was feeling especially nervous. The Mossberg is pretty badarss but the .45 is the deadly weapon. I hope to sell them both as soon as Biden is president.

Conservatives are truly nuts and a danger to this country. I'm not a Nancy and don't need a gun to keep me secure, but with this loons packed to the gills I've considered and looked at some revolvers.
