Thank you everyone who provided feedback and suggestions regarding Mock 1.0 over the course of the past week. I have incorporated some of that feedback in this mock.

Hire:

Matt Nagy as OC - As job openings across the league are starting to be filled, several candidates on the Eagles list have already accepted positions elsewhere, and Brian Daboll who I had as the OC hire in Mock 1.0 is widely expected to take either the Bills HC or the Titans OC job. Of the remaining candidates the Eagles have interviewed, Nagy is the best option. The organization is familiar with Nagy as his coaching career began with the Eagles in 2008 before following Andy Reid to the Chiefs in 2013. Nagy has had two separate stints with the Chiefs as their OC with a HC stint with the Bears for 4 years sandwiched in between, making the playoffs 2 of those 4 years. Nagy reportedly allowed his contract to expire to pursue HC openings this cycle. He interviewed for 4 of the HC openings and two of them are still open at this time: Cardinals, Raiders. However, with the strength of the overall coaching pool, I predict that Nagy does not get a HC position and he instead comes back to Philly as the new OC. The Eagles interest in Charlie Weis Jr. from Ole Miss and Declan Doyle with the Bears is certainly intriguing, but I don’t see the franchise taking another chance on a first time NFL playcaller after their experiences with Brian Johnson and Kevin Patullo, so they go with Nagy here.

Retire:

DE Brandon Graham - Graham un-retiring to play another season was a great story but it’s unlikely that he does the same this upcoming season. He’s already one of the only few Eagles that can claim to be a part of both Super Bowl victories in franchise history, with nothing left to prove.

Cut:

CB Michael Carter II - Buried on our depth chart after our mid-season trade, saves us 8.7 million as a pre-June 1st cut, which helps the Eagles bring back their key free agents.

Re-sign:

DE Jaelan Phillips - Young player that’s too talented to simply let him walk for the comp pick that he’ll garner, Phillips is our best edge rusher and comes back on a 4 year deal.

TE Dallas Goedert - With the season he’s had in the red zone and with no heir apparent in the roster, Goedert comes back on another 1 year deal while Howie hopes to find his successor in the draft.

S Reed Blankenship - Solid starter at a position where we still have some question marks at despite investing two Day 2 picks at the position recently, Blankenship comes back on a 2 year deal.

P Braden Mann - The bright spot of our special teams unit, Mann comes back as our punter on a 2 year deal.

OT Fred Johnson - Performed admirably for us whenever Lane Johnson is out, comes back on a 1 year deal.

Free agency:

WR Olamide Zacchaeus - After being buried on a talented Bears WR room with the emergence of first round pick Luther Burden III, Zacchaeus comes back to Philly on a 1 year veteran minimum deal to compete for the WR3 spot.

QB Gardner Minshew - He comes in on a 1 year veteran minimum deal for the QB3 spot behind Tanner McKee. Minshew has familiarity with Matt Nagy as the Chiefs QB2 this season and had a prior stint with the Eagles for 2 seasons before bouncing around the league the past few years as a journeyman QB.

Draft

Rnd 1 (23) - Kadyn Proctor OT Alabama - Proctor has the size profile that the Eagles like in their OL in the run blocking game at 6’7 and 366 lbs. While his technique was inconsistent at Alabama, he’s in the perfect spot to be developed by Jeff Stoutland to be the successor to Lane Johnson at RT. He has a similar size profile to Mekhi Becton, and could start at RG as a rookie over Tyler Steen before sliding over to RT after Johnson retires.

Rnd 2 (54) Keionte Scott CB Miami - Scott is a versatile DB who has played at outside CB, nickel, and safety during his time at Miami with a physical playing style and strong effort in run defense to go along with his natural instincts in zone coverage. The major knock with Scott is consistency in with his tackling technique and his performance against bigger, more physical WRs. With Adoree Jackson’s inconsistent performance being a sore spot this season, the team brings in more competition at the CB2 spot. Scott has decent size to play at the outside at 6’0 and 192 lbs.

Rnd 3 (68) Dani Dennis-Sutton DE Penn State -  The lack of depth at DE was apparent early on in the season, especially after ZaDarius Smith’s abrupt early season retirement, prompting a series of events including Brandon Graham coming out of retirement and the midseason trade for Jaelan Phillips. Dennis-Sutton has great size for an EDGE rusher at 6’5 and 265 lbs and can contribute right away on defense with his versatility to work out of both 2 point and 3 point stances. Bringing back Phillips is a great start in strengthening our pass rush, but there is still a need for depth here.

Rnd 3 (98) Zakee Wheatley S Penn State - Even though the Eagles already spent Day 2 draft capital on Sydney Brown and Andrew Mukuba recently, the safety position beyond Blankenship is still a question mark. Wheatley is a versatile safety who can play both FS and SS positions. His tackling technique can sometimes be sloppy with a tendency for arm tackles, but Wheatley is a well balanced prospect overall who could push for playing time early.

Rnd 4 (122) Deion Burks WR Oklahoma - With Jahan Dotson walking in free agency, the WR3 spot is up for grabs. Burks is a bit undersized to line up at outside WR at 5’9 but he can fill the role of slot receiver with his route running ability and speed to create separation. He also offers positional versatility as a returner as well.

Rnd 4 (137) Oscar Delp TE Georgia - Delp has decent size for a TE at 6’5 and 245 lbs, paired with above average speed at the position, projected to run in the 4.5s at the Combine. The production at Georgia has been modest unfortunately. Of note, Delp had to wait for his opportunity to shine as he also shared the field with both Darnell Washington and Brock Bowers his first few seasons. Delp has positional versatility to be lined up all over the field and is a decent blocker for his size as well. He should be able to contribute as a rookie as our TE2, with Calcaterra and Granson leaving in free agency.

Rnd 5 (151) - Trey Moore LB Texas - With Nakobe Dean leaving in free agency, the depth chart at LB after Zach Baun opens up, presumably with Jihaad Campbell sliding in as a starter on the depth chart. Moore is a LB by his listed position at 6'3 and 250 lbs, but also projects as an EDGE rusher. He will help offset the losses of Josh Uche and Azeez Ojulari in free agency as a situational pass rusher.

Rnd 5 (179) Trey Smack K Florida - Unfortunately Jake Elliott has regressed this season and it’s time to look for another kicker. Smack has connected with over 80% of his FG attempts each of the past 3 seasons and has only missed one XP attempt his entire college career. He does well with his kicks over 50 yards, going 5/6 this past season with kicks from that distance.

Eaglesfan - yours is another off-season I'd love to see come to fruition. I have my fingers croosed that it does. Nice work.

You know my thoughts about out cap situation and that it will make in almost impossible to sign 3 of our primary free agents - Phillips, Blankenship, and Goedert. Basically, I agree with you with the caveat that its either Goedert or Phillips. If I'm right it would be re-sign Phillips particularly when you take age into account.

Although I see a little bit of Penn State fandom, the draft is really solid and I don't think any Eagle fan wouldn't like it. If we lose all three of our tight ends in free agency we might need another somwhere in the draft. Likewise, look at quarterback, there are only 2 on the roster since Green Bay signed McCord.

Nice read, thanks.

I think Howie finds a way to bring back 3 of the 4 key free agents - Phillips, Blankenship, Goedert, and Dean. I had Dean as the odd man out in this mock. If we could only bring back 2 of the 4 then I agree that Phillips and Blankenship would be considered priority over Goedert.

The funny thing about the Penn State thing is that I was just looking for players that made sense at the position and pick slot. A bit of a coincidence, but I was considering some other players at those spots also.

Regarding TE, you bring up a good point. Even with re-signing Goedert and drafting a TE, there's a need for a 3rd TE still. Will have to take that into consideration for the next mock.

As for having 3 QBs in the roster, I kept McKee in mock 2.0 instead of trading him away and brought in Gardner Minshew as the QB3 in free agency. That should take care of the need at QB.

Te3 isn’t that huge though it would be nice to have a blocker..

Rob likes his qb in the draft I just haven’t came around to the idea.. I think overall it’s a weak class and while it may not be in round 1 teams will still overdraft them.

I'd rather not be in a position of need, but there are only 2 on the roster, Hurts, and McKee. Even if we only keep 2 on the roster we still need one on the practice squad and he can't be a tomato can in case of emergencies.

def gonna draft a QB for that 3rd spot i would think , no real point in bringing back minshew who could be a 2nd qb on at least 10 teams in the league .

Good news for the Minshew idea is that it’s now been reported that he did not tear his ACL as originally feared and only had a very bad bone bruise and is healthy for free agency
