Eagles hire Packers QBs coach Sean Mannion as new offensive coordinator and Josh Grizzard as Passing Game Coordinator

There's no way Patulo can stay in the building at this point right? How would he not undermine a coach ten years younger than him going into his third year on the sideline?

Is this honestly a good hire? I don't know much about the guy, but I was really hoping for someone along the lines of a Kellen Moore type genius

Kellen Moore was no genius, Eagles were not even running his offense. The Oline was healthy which put together an unstoppable run game that won the Superbowl.

You know what's frustrating? Fans hate Nick so much that they'll say this now, but if it's successful, then they'll say it's 'Mannion's offense' to give Nick no credit. And then if it fails, they'll point to it being 'Nick's offense', to justify getting rid of him. RIP.

I actually don't think there's any way for Nick to recover his reputation even if he wins two more SBs here. I think the only way is if we absolutely crater the hire afterwards.

Mannion may turn out to be a good OC.

But, Fire Sirianni now, a HC that can't call a play.

And, trade Hurts, a franchise QB that can't find the open receiver.

Avoid any further angst.

Bold of you to assume you have "sway."

P

Anyway I locked the other one & pinned this one.

HA I never assume anything (it was just pure hope)! lol

But thank you.

Is it too early to start stocking up on eggs?? Asking for a friend. ph34r

Please remember that Kellen Moore took six weeks to figure out the offense. I'm not sure he earned the genius label.

I will try to be optimistic with Manion. I don't love how green he is, but I'm grateful he was hired from outside the organization. The last two OC's to be promoted from within didn't pan out.

Mannion isn't exactly what we were all hoping for in the sense of proven experience...which is what logic dictated we needed for the offense. I said this in the tracker thread about Mannion...that one part of me would be like WTH are we doing and the other part of me being like maybe it's so crazy that he must be good. And that's pretty much how I feel about this hire.

Of all the known candidates left, Mannion certainly seems like the biggest swing-for-the-fences hire. Could be a homerun, could be a strike out. But this hire says they aren't "playing it safe" like they could have with, say, hiring Cooter. Could this end up in disaster? Absolutely. Could it work out and get the offense back on track? Absolutely.

A year from now @time2rock could be egging his house or buying him beers, we'll just have to see what happens!

Yep, it's done. I'm not really thinking odds of success at this point because quite frankly that might not be a happy place. But the positive scenarios are intriguing and I'm sticking with that until we see the games played and have something to judge.

On another note I'd really like to see him bring a few of his own coaches in. If they don't change any other coaches that would be a bad sign imo

If choosing between Mannion and Nagy, I'm going Mannion all day every day. Even though I was one that was advocating for someone with previous success as a play caller, I'd much rather someone who is unproven in that area than someone who has proven to be just meh at best. Like I said elsewhere, just because he hasn't called plays doesn't mean he can't. Not every inexperienced coach is going to perform as badly as Patullo. There have been plenty of first time OCs that were super successful even though they had zero play calling experience when they were first hired. Just have to hit on the right guy. Hopefully we did just that here.

I was hoping that Eagles were looking to bring over some of the Seahawks staff.

Guess not.

I knew as soon as they hired Patullo last year what was going to happen. And some of you gave me a ton of grief- the same ones who are doing it now, ironically. Until I saw you on here screaming for Patullo's head on a platter later in the year. Same with this inexperienced coach with zero OC experience. I'lll see you in here next year- screaming for his head after saying he was going to be great. 🤣🤡

2023- Johnson- no OC experience, disaster

2025- Patullo- no OC experience, disaster

2026- Mannion- no OC experience- disaster

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over but expecting different results.

This, by definition- is insanity.

I love the Grizzard hire. Makes me feel better about the OC hire.

Grizzard, hopefully, and I think he will, scheme up the passing game and get the Offense to evolve.

These two new Coaches will/should run a real, modern NFL Offense.

Fully agree. Nagy was the guy I least wanted. Hopefully Mannion will implement some better plays to have on the play call sheet to choose from!

Yeah I like it too. Interesting that he was a finalist for the OC job and ends up here anyway.

So here's your problem.

  1. Good coaches who have called plays tend to be unavailable.

  2. Bad coaches who have called plays are available, but not something you're suggesting should be done, are you?

So in the end, you gotta take a shot with someone who can demonstrate their philosophy during an interview. I believe that the Eagles have learned how to hire by their previous mistakes.

Is there someone you think Eagles should have hired?

This makes me feel so much better about the offense. Neither was high on my list or even on it but fresh ideas is great

OC doesn’t mean you know how to call plays. This guy could turn out to be a success.

I just heard the Eagles are hiring former Buccaneers offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard as their pass game coordinator. THIS might make things work. Grizzard and Mannion working together? IF they let Grizzard help with the play calling if needed- is a smart move by the Eagles. For me, I can back off the "INSANITY" remarks I made and say ok, THIS might work. The other way was never going to work. Here is hoping it true and it works.

Run game didn't win the SB. Run game got us there

Getting Grizzard is a hell of a bonus. Some new blood and new ideas at least hypes me up and gives me hope for the season.

we ran a watered-down version of his offense, however, he was influential in the scheme of the offense. The guy is one of the most respected offensive minds in football. If he wasn't a difference maker, why did Brian Johnson and Kevin Patullo fail on either side of him?

Howie and Lurie are not messing around: two OC candidates hired to help fix the offense and especially pass offense.

There's no way - regardless of what you think of Hurts - that they shouldn't have had a much better passing game and overall offense last year. They have a roster full of star players. They had an EASY path to repeat the way the NFL was this year and they blew it.

And you now have 2 guys with outside, fresh ideas. If this works out and Siri keeps winning as HC, and Mannion gets hired elsewhere you can keep Grizzard as OC. If they do fire Nick at some point, Mannion could become HC and Grizzard OC. Not saying any of that will happen, but I'm guessing Howie likes having the options available to him. Plus other candidates they interviewed they will remember in future years.

Might eventually soar to the stars. Might eventually crash and burn. I'll be watching for growth over the season. If he's markedly better at the end of the year than he was at the beginning because the offense is running smoother, I'll be a happy fan. One season was more than enough to judge Patullo. We saw that he never got better and in some ways got worse. This is Manion's season to show he belongs through incremental or even steady improvement and growth as an OC. I hope he does exactly that.
