RIP Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the demure firebrand who in her 80s became a legal, cultural and feminist icon, died Friday. The Supreme Court announced her death, saying the cause was complications from metastatic cancer of the pancreas.

The court, in a statement, said Ginsburg died at her home in Washington surrounded by family.

"Our nation has lost a justice of historic stature," Chief Justice John Roberts said. "We at the Supreme Court have lost a cherished colleague. Today we mourn but with confidence that future generations will remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg as we knew her, a tired and resolute champion of justice."

Architect of the legal fight for women's rights in the 1970s, Ginsburg subsequently served 27 years on the nation's highest court, becoming its most prominent member. Her death will inevitably set in motion what promises to be a nasty and tumultuous political battle over who will succeed her, and it thrusts the Supreme Court vacancy into the spotlight of the presidential campaign.

Just heard the news. It's always sad to hear of a death, unless you're talking about someone like Hitler or Hussein, or someone like that. So while I wanted her off the court, I certainly won't celebrate her passing away. Thoughts and prayers for her family.

I was actually wondering where that scumbag greenskeeper was since he NEVER failed to gleefully post hypothetical questions about her death. Can a mod give this a-hole a decent spanking for a change?

The last thing this election needed

So I don’t really want to go straight into the politics, but I think the GOP rams through a nominee before the election. Then when Dems take power they expand the Supreme Court.

Anyone want to explain to me why this is so terrible?  I mean,  obviously someone passed and that's usually a sad thing.  Most of you know I don't really do politics.  So as a lay person,  I don't know why this is so abnormally bad?

Well, the GOP already stole one seat that was vacated at the end of Obama's term when they refused to hold confirmation hearings for Merrick Garland and then nominated Gorsuch as soon as Trump took office. Now we get to see B*tch McConnell flip-flop on his made up rule about not nominating an new justice during an election year.

Because the election was already going to be controversial with everything else that’s going on. Now add on the potential for what TEW said.  Even if the Republicans back down, it just raises the tension over who wins that much more

This is awful on so many levels. She will be sorely missed.

Cant go that far

but given precedent she should not be replaced until after the election

If that happens, I think we will see court packing. One for RBG and one for Garland.

This was mentioned this afternoon, so at that time it was hypothetical. But still interesting.

Agreed that she shouldn’t be replaced. I hope a year from now we can have beers and talk about how crazy I got around election time. My first thought was the new Supreme Court will decide this election.

She should have had the decency to die either 12 months ago or wait till after the election

Yup, now Trump can pack SCOTUS with another nominee for when he contests the election.
