There used to be a series of red lines/third rails whatever the F you want to call them what were sacrosanct to both parties. For the most part, Republicans and Democrats agreed that you don't F with the rule of law and clear Constitutional provisions. That's all been thrown out the window, and the Republicans sent us on the inevitable path to authoritarianism with the s*** they pulled during the last administration.

You can make all the false equivalencies you want, but it's just lazy analysis and a refusal to acknowledge reality. The reality is that unethical behaviors exist on a continuum, and Republicans have spent the past 20 years building a brand defined by underhandedness and chicanery of the most sinister kind. When the history of this shameful epoch is etched in stone, they will own the downfall of this republic.

It doesn’t matter but....”you literally can use my words against me” doesn’t really move the needle in a post-truth era

Graham will have no trouble voting on a nominee anyway.  He lacks a conscience.

What if Trump nominates FOLEZZZZZZZ

I wouldn’t be opposed to lining up the top 10 from each party... even let them debate it out about who "wins” a top 10 spot... pop them all in the head and tell the leftovers we’re doing it again in one year unless $h!t gets straight.

drumpf is so finished after this

Considering he has a decent chance to lose and he is 74 years old, I’d be worried about the outcomes.

these pundits get so much wrong. They really dont seem the grasp the intersection of behavior and game theory

Speaking of game theory, attempting to  through a new justice is a no brainer for the GOP.

Trump is an underdog. So from a pure power perspective a 20% (or whatever) chance of 4 years of Trump is no where near as valuable as a 50% chance (or whatever) 15+ years of a SCOTUS justice.

If the nomination fails, it fires up the GOP base to vote. So you’ve increased the odds of a Trump win if you fail to get the seat.

To add to that, the left is already talking about rioting over a nomination. More riots favor Trump for re-election, especially in the key suburban demographic.

Really nothing to lose for the GOP.

Just saw this news a little bit ago. Very sad. Rest in peace. I haven't read this topic but I hope people are being respectful.

Yeah good luck. They would do the same thing if they were in the GOP's shoes and anyone who says different is full of it. Even if they wait until after the election and Trump wins the Dems will find a reason to stack the court down the line the next time they get power.

So I don’t really want to go straight into the politics, but I think the GOP rams through a nominee before the election. Then when Dems take power they expand the Supreme Court.

Just horrible.  We can look back at the mistakes along the way that lead up to this.  Plenty of poo poooing in here when people tried to bring those up including in 2016.

Nominating someone before the election would be a huge political mistake and would seal his fate. If he's smart, which he obviously isn't, he won't even mention anything about a nomination until after the election.

Have you been living under a rock for four+ years?

Re: TJ TEW others on undecided voters. I think most would agree Trump Hilary were polarizing overall than Trump Biden and enough voters were swayed by Comey inquiry at the last minute to get them to switch from Clinton to Trump. You absolutely have voters who can be influenced

Yeah but this scenario is WAY different than 2016.  As much as the Repubs try they aren't going to be able to remove the "vanilla Joe" label AND after four years the dislike for Trump runs very deep for those that have crossed.  The group that can truly move over the last several weeks is quite small.

McConnell and the Rs blocking Garland for an entire year because it’s an election year and then having press releases prepared within 90 minutes of RBG’s death saying there will be a Senate vote for Trump’s nominee like six weeks ahead of the election is one of the most infuriating things I’ve ever seen in politics.

There is no decency and there are no ethics with that man. It’s disgusting.

It is over dude.  The whole thing is about to come crashing down.  The question is how.  I think the Dems are going to split in two and the moderate group will pillage the Repubs leaving three main parties plus the little startups.  We'll see a good bit of violence along with this.  How much and how widespread is really the big question.  The US political landscape is about to undergo its biggest change in decades.

Do you have any insight into yourself?  Any self awareness at all?  If so then you understand that you are a direct contributor to this division albeit on a small scale of course.

Trump’s favorite pollster thinks moving forward before the election is a mistake.

I tend to agree.  I do think Trump has a hard time winning over moderate suburban women in this election though and RBG dying won’t help that.

Can definitely see Harris seizing on the feminism angle

If Trump has any brain, he’ll nominate an African American female.
