Toastrel Posted September 30, 2020 Posted September 30, 2020 A mother with three kids at the beach. The children get caught in rip currents. She goes out, saves the two youngest and bring them to shore. Then she drowns trying to save the third. I'm going to leave the swimming with no lifeguard thing alone. If you get caught in a rip current, swim parallel to the shore. You can't fight a current, most likely, and you will tire yourself out going nowhere. I have had to do this, I was a lifeguard for a while. https://www.nj.com/cape-may-county/2020/09/mom-drowns-trying-to-rescue-her-3-children-from-rip-current-at-jersey-shore-beach.html 2
Kz! Posted September 30, 2020 Posted September 30, 2020 I was in the Outer Banks two weeks ago. The red no-swimming signs were up for the duration of the trip and the water was really rough. I did go out with a boogie board one time, and, yeah, the riptide was legit.
Passepartout Posted October 1, 2020 Posted October 1, 2020 Really hate that for the mother and how she sacrificed her life for those three kids. Thoughts and prayers!

I don't care how big or strong you are. This dude recently lost his life in the same situation with his son: 1
Toastrel Posted October 1, 2020 Author Posted October 1, 2020 I was down in Cape May a couple of times this summer. With social distancing there were a lot more people inhabiting the no swimming areas with no lifeguards. Lots of people swimming there. Often the reason for no swimming areas is due to rip currents.
DiPros Posted October 1, 2020 Posted October 1, 2020 That is so sad. I read about this this morning as it was scrolling on the screen. In the 3 hours of local news I never once heard it reported out loud. I don't get that, as it's basically 3 hours of repeating the same thing in 30 minute increments. If I'm awake early enough it's enough to make me walk away, get downstairs and start rowing.
homerpat Posted October 2, 2020 Posted October 2, 2020 Have been caught in a nasty rip as a teen in Hatteras and thank god I didn’t panic and treaded and slowly moved sideways. was exhausted before i made it back in. It’s scary as ish
