Like, Wifi.  Isn't most home automation is made to connect to your home router?

No. Most require lightweight low-power protocols like Z-wave, BLE, etc.

Wifi is too power hungry for anything running off of a battery that can't be easily replaced. Even things that are powered, like lighting, typically use zigbee.

That's what I was missing.  Thank you

Zigbee was being used by things like smart meters with the idea that you can go into your power companies portal and control zigbee devices with your meter as the entry point.  Once smart phone apps caught up and the Nest's of the world came into play, Zigbee is pretty much worthless IMO.

Again, I'm a n00b, so its likely I'm missing something

Not sure what smart phone apps you're referring to, but that's a different link in the chain entirely. These are device to hub interfaces, so a smart phone is irrelevant, since it's interfacing with the hub, not with the devices directly. If you're familiar with the philips hue line, they use zigbee from the hub to the light. Many of the smart switches from GE, Inovelli, etc also use zigbee. If it's being phased out in favor of something else non-proprietary, it has yet to show up in the product lines of the bigger HA OEMs.

I was thinking more user to hub, not hub to devices.

we've been paying a home security company $50 a month for their crappy service & are about to cancel. do any of you use a home security system you would recommend?  i know there are a lot of kits you install yourself. we do have a ring doorbell & i believe they offer a full home security system as well...but i don't know much about it.

thnx.

Try this one.

I want to get the floodlight one but the reviews are so up and down on it.  I would love to replace my existing floodlight on the garage with it but I'm not sure if it's worth it.

I just upgraded from an old wired system to Ring.  Doorbell and two flood light cameras.  It is fantastic.  A little touchy until you get it adjusted.  We have a Harley covered in the driveway, and the wind making the cover move was setting it off, had to set up a separate zone around the bike and turn the sensitivity way down.

It will hammer your phone battery, but you can download the desktop app and turn off phone alerts ( which is what I do at work )

We almost got that, we desperately need to replace the one here. But the "deal" on it was another one of those Echo Show 5, which we got with the doorbell and newer ones are out.

We are talking about doorbells, not ****s.

I have had two flood lights installed for about 10 days.  They are fantastic.

I'd just get the doorbell one but the way our house is it would maybe catch just a bit of the front yard on not much of the driveway.  On the garage it would get the whole yard and driveway.  That way when the deer come to eat my shrubs in the winter at night I can take care of them.

I'd be replacing a floodlight mounted to the soffit.  Which I guess you can still do with them.

When they transfered the database over they probably could have abandoned the filters...

I have a Ring Doorbell too and the stupid thing "motion at your ring video doorbell" at least 2-3 times a night over nothing. Probably a cars headlight turning a corner and blasting the sensor just right

This oughta do

Yes, camera can be rotated 360 degrees, so soffit and wall mounting both work.

Not really an issue for me since my driveway is about 100 yards long.  Just cats, deer, fox and trash pandas.

I had that issue initially.  Go into Smart Alerts on the app and turn on people only mode.

Our floodlight would be in the back yard.  I've kind of been wanting one to keep a crazy horse lady out of my back yard.

Do they come with a wide angle lense, too?
