Wait... you have to pay extra for that service? I thought the plus feature was just 4 extra seconds of video.

October 13, 20204 yr Ah, thank you. I'm a n00b to this. All I know is schmoopie said "I want one", so I bought it this AM. Using the EMB affiliate link, of course.
October 13, 20204 yr I have the ring doorbell, an ADT sign in my front lawn, and a few softball bats. No one has broken in yet.
October 13, 20204 yr Just put some pics of your face in each window, @mr_hunt Any burglars will think twice when they see that Sloth from The Goonies lives there

I did some digging on this a couple years ago when I installed ours. Ultimately it depends on what you need it for and how you want to interact with it. If you need a quick rundown of the pros and cons, let me know.
October 13, 20204 yr I have the $60 ring device for just over a year now, because I was billed a few days back another $60ish dollars for my subscription renewal. Does not notify police or fire, but saves 100% of video to cloud to pull back and watch... I have only done it from my phone and not v easy to change days or hours. Maybe if I tried on a computer accessing prior feeds would be less frustrating. I will test now.

If you need a quick rundown of the pros and cons, let me know. if you have pros/cons on ring, i'll take it! from the little research i've done, i'll be able to mirror the system we currently pay $50/mo for through ring for $100/yr. of course, i have to buy the kit, sensors, etc. up front but it will pay for itself in less than 1 year.

The biggest question is: Do you still want the monitoring service or do you plan to do this yourself? Second biggest question is: Do you remember to arm the system every night or do you forgot to do this some nights and would prefer a system that can automatically arm and disarm at certain times of the day, or when your phones are detected as being at home or leaving the house. There are other things to consider, but those are the two main ones.
October 13, 20204 yr Never got around to finishing this, and most of the info is probably out of date now (couple years old), but it can give you an idea of the different features you might be interested in...

Ring is probably what you'll want then. Cheapest monitoring plans and cheaper overall system with ability to add-on as needed.
October 13, 20204 yr i have to big dogs that try to get through the window when anyone walks by the house. i think we are good.

October 13, 20204 yr I had the google nest 3-pack. Loved the cameras soooo much more than Ring and the different settings and features. You could disable stuff when you are home based on location services, auto-engage when you leave, or set to a time/calendar schedule. Their subscription prices were stupid high though so I returned after the trial window and got the more affordable ring. Just now, greend said: yeah we saw how that worked out for Broenna Taylor
October 13, 20204 yr Ubiquiti for advance users. Better than Ring and Nest as their is no additional fees. Wyze is a good budget alternative. Also invest in motion sensored outdoor smart lights

Also invest in motion sensored outdoor smart lights That's technically a surveillance solution, not a security solution. The difference is they don't have any form of "alarm" state where a siren begins sounding and a monitoring service can contact the user/authorities.

I'm out of touch with some of these technologies, but isnt Zigbee basically becoming a dinosaur now that everyone has wireless?

Aren't most home automation devices made to connect to your home router and control through apps? Zigbee was being used by things like smart meters with the idea that you can go into your power companies portal and control zigbee devices with your meter as the entry point. Once smart phone apps caught up and the Nest's of the world came into play, Zigbee is pretty much worthless IMO. Again, I'm a n00b, so its likely I'm missing something
