VaBeach_Eagle Posted November 11, 2020 Posted November 11, 2020 On the old EMB, I had a thread that I started and would bump every Veterans day. So, new EMB, new thread to bump each year (God willing). Today is a day to thank and honor those who have served in the military, and are still living. (The day to honor those who died in the line of duty is in May, Memorial Day). So, from one old Soldier to all of the other old Soldiers, Marines, Sailors, Airmen and Guardsmen, happy Veterans Day and thank you to each and everyone of you for raising your right hand and taking that oath. 5 2

Toastrel Posted November 18, 2020 Posted November 18, 2020 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/11/10/jeffrey-smith-veterans-day-wwii-father-son-letter/?arc404=true#the-full-letter Quote On Sunday, March 11, 1945, as his infantry unit paused in Acht, Germany, to prepare for the dangerous crossings of two rivers, the Moselle and the Main, a slender, bespectacled captain and former violinist in the Kansas City Philharmonic found a typewriter and wrote a letter to his son. The captain, my father, had landed on Utah Beach on June 8, fought in Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge and been awarded two Purple Hearts, two Silver Stars and a Bronze Star with a "V” for valor. As he sat at the typewriter, I was in Kansas, only four months old. Although the end of the war seemed to be in sight, he was undoubtedly aware that he might not live to see me. He did not mail his letter but put it with his personal effects, knowing it would be safely shipped to my mother should he be killed. The letter remained in his personal papers until my younger sister found it in the spring of 2019. Letter from a father in WW II to the son he hadn't met. The father survived the war and the letter was never sent. Thanks to all who served but special thanks for those who faced the enemy in combat. 3 1
