I made three of these raised beds about four years ago, and one this past spring. The bottom fell out on one of the older ones so I figured I’d move them out of the middle of the yard, since I had to take one apart to repair it. I also decide to stain them black.

The biggest PITA was moving about 60 cubic ft of dirt two times.

They look great!  What did you line them with?

We experimented with a self watering one from costco and loved it.  They are expensive though so I wonder if it's worth it to build one.

Oh and..... really dumb question

I don't know the differences with dirt, but would it have made sense\help to take the old dirt, use it to top dress the yard, and then get new dirt bagged from lowes\HD for the new beds?

I know potting soil has a lot of crap in it like moss but maybe dirt for beds is closer to ground soil?

Thanks, The bottoms have chicken wire over the slats, and landscaping cloth over that.

I built the original three out of cedar when wood prices were through the roof. I built the last ones out of ground contact PT for around $100 in lumber, plus the chicken wire, fabric, and hardware. I think the dirt was close to $100. The dirt is specific for elevated beds. I’m not sure of the exact mix, but it’s lighter than normal garden soil. I don’t think it would be a bad top dressing, but expensive because I buy it in bags.

The ones you got from Costco look pretty solid. I like the green house cover option and have thought about making something similar.

Nailed it

Normally after I caulk, I give it 24 hours to cure before painting.  However, last night when I was caulking the board and batten one of the boards popped.  Since I couldn't fix it until this morning (baby girl was asleep), I finished my caulk job about 30 minutes ago.

Any issues painting this evening as planned? or do I need to hold for a day?  It does say dries in 30 minutes so I think it should be fine, but said popped board was on a bowed wall and therefore I had to fill a 1/4 inch gap with caulk so it's going to take longer to dry.

1/4" ? that's a lotta cawk .

I did a raised garden bed in my yard, and did it no-dig.  It actually just started out as a pile of dirt, and then this past spring when I spread it out I put some wood barriers around it to contain the soil.

My uncle is big into growing things now, outside of his fishing business, and he told me I should ask the mushroom farms up in the Hockessin/Avondale/Kennett Square area for their used soil, because apparently it's sterilized, so you could minimize weeds.

I learned a new trick while doing this project.  One thing I always struggled with was hiding the nail holes (18 gauge) from the nail gun.  I would wood putty and sand but it never looked quite right, there was always a discoloration.  This project?  I know where they are and I can't see them.

The secret?

Oil based primer.

After nailing I would make sure all the nails are fully driven.  Then I would wood putty, dry, sand.  Repeat.  Feel where you sanded with your eyes closed, if you can't feel it, you won't be able to see it.  Then before I painted, I put a layer of oil based primer over where I nailed and let it dry before painting.  The person who suggested that I use the oil based primer said a light coat.  F em, I put two coats to make sure I couldn't see it before painting.  Came out perfect.

That looks really good @paco!!!  Love it.

I started painting the kitchen this weekend. I can't remember the last time it was done.  I am nowhere close to being a perfectionist and being a tenant, I get middle grade paint and try to stay on a low budget.  I just need my living space to be clean and functional.  If I owned the place, I would do better and really fix all the things that are wrong, like there's no exhaust fan, and I would definitely upgrade the ancient Ohio kitchen sink.  LOL.  My goal was to get the ceiling done; walls primed and get behind the stove done so I can put it back.   Painted the baseboard back there during halftime.  $263. spent so far.

Before and work in progress.
