Posted February 23, 20214 yr Tomorrow will be 9 months I’m out here on my own. Every time I think I’m doing Ok, there’s something or someone that sends me into this overwhelming abyss. I’ll have to eat the last piece of magic candy I have tonight because I’m sick and tired of trying to stay sober and tired of having this recurring dream of me wandering- or should I say meandering around. Lol. At least it all seems to come in waves now. This is just a passing wave. I have some questions about taxes and just things. I’ll post them tomorrow. Too nervous right now. Thanks for listening helping me.
February 23, 20214 yr Hang in there Di. This may not make sense to you right now, but your strength is truly inspirational.
February 24, 20214 yr We're here for you. I'm sure you will get plenty of tax help or advice here, where despite our crazy differences, we do support each other in the small ways we can and do care.
February 24, 20214 yr Author Thanks. I took advantage of the extension last year and paid taxes In July noting that Mr Di was deceased. Looking at his invoices and receipts for 2020, he bought more than he billed and it’s only a few thousand. If that. One job he was paid cash which was the largest job he did. The one SSDI check he received I believe is not taxable? So hope I’m ok filing just me and not claiming any income for him? By March when the pandemic started he was not really working. I remember it was all we could do to keep him out of Lowe’s and the grocery store! I actually read the electric bill. Didn’t realize I’m on a variable rate. Maybe I shouldn’t be? Kids got me an electric fireplace. Between running that and the heat it was $188.00. Last fall I had an $80. Bill. Quite an increase. Got oil last month, another $400 and already burned a 1/4 tank living at 60-62 degrees! While I stayed right on top of Mr Di’s medical claims which are all paid and done, my stuff has gone to collections. I disputed and sent copies of 2 checks but the *itch just wrote back sending me the bills not acknowledging anything!! There’s over $400 of my money that went somewhere and not where it was supposed to go. Pissed I have to sort this out-again. Plus, already $1,800 in for 2021 from an mri. Boob pics are expensive!! They’re black and white images and still getting flagged to be done every 6 months! Time to go row.

February 24, 20214 yr Author I thought maybe getting the mail was a trigger!? Guess not, it just happens. The *itch from the collection company was wrong again. Just wrote her back after I looked it over-AGAIN. The itemized copies they sent me did not jive with the balance due amount written on the letter. Who does that? I'm not the best record keeper but I would never send out a bill without the proper back up. So, I once again disputed it and will try to get it out of my head. I know what I owe. Part of me wants to just send the check, but it's the principal of it all. Should I not hear back from them, it will go on to a 2nd company which will offer me a settlement. I know this, because that's what I did for 2017 and 2018's bills. I'm probably going to pay some or in full what I owe so far for 2021. This will never stop, unless I just quit going. Which it's not likely I will do that, but I think about it. Anyway, this whole deal just sets me off and I truly appreciate being able to vent about it. Thanks again.

Write off his business loss and take advantage of the increased standard deduction. 2021 you'll file single.

C with a loss, but I'll figure it out. What about business use of home since he only ran a business for 2 months? Just skip that expense? I always took the standard deduction amount for that without itemizing. The less forms I have to do, the better! Can I still claim his liability insurance as an expense even though I didn't renew it in July? I sold his truck, for cash $1,500. I don't believe I have to report that sale anywhere either do I? If so, where? Can I expense the notary fee? Can I still do a mileage expense for those 2 months he was operating it? The SSDI check is non taxable, correct? That's the only 1099 he received and it says to check if taxable or not. Thank you.

If you want to keep it simple just book the income and any expenses including anything paid after his death for the business. It's fine to show a loss. OIH you could prorate it for 2/12 months if you want. Truck sale depends on whether you used standard mileage or actual expenses (don't do anything with notary fees). Standard you do nothing (still take the mileage). Actual expenses you'd possibly have a 4797 gain if it was fully depreciated. Or just ignore it because odds are the IRS won't give a crap and they're totally Fed up right now thanks to COVID. We're getting notices for some clients dated a year ago. SSDI you'll put on your return since it may be taxable due to your joint earnings. Most people who are getting SSDI aren't earning enough income for it to be taxable. Any questions feel free to PM and I'll point you in the right direction! Keep your head up Di!

I do remember now reading and studying last year that I should also file jointly this year. When you don't do this everyday I have to get geared up for it, and you've been very helpful. I'll let you know if I need anything else once I delve myself back in some numbers. Ahhhhhhh!!! Always hated this time of year. Thankfully it's not much and I can keep it simple. I'm so sorry about those clients. Awful.
February 26, 20214 yr Praying that you stay sober. And that it is hard. As have an uncle who is an alcoholic too. But need to remember you are not in this alone. You aren't the first nor will you be the last there. But hopefully loved ones will encourage you to keep on keeping on
February 27, 20214 yr Author Making record time. Almost done. Mr. Di was never techno so we've been pushing the paper and pen all these years. Last time I will doing it this way. Sad, but not too bad. Is it too early for a beer? LOL Thank you again for helping me keep my head on straight. Married was definitely the way to go. Refund will pay for my MRI with a little extra.
February 27, 20214 yr Author Passepartout would not be proud of me today. I'm toast before 2pm. Oh well. Deed is done. It was hard but it's done. Mind you I also had to call the landlord and tell him the sewer tank alarm was going off this morning. Someone came, no idea what happened, but I know something is still wrong. Tomorrow is another day. /end this thread. Can't make this ish up.

March 4, 20214 yr Author Realized today I never received a 2nd stimulus check, and I didn't fill in line 30 on my 1040 and now it's gone. Will this be there next year? Will the nice people @ the IRS office catch it?

March 5, 20214 yr Author 18 hours ago, mr_hunt said: file an amended return. Thank you. Never did that before, just posting this if there are any other tax dummies out there that may have made this error. I will go back to last year and be sure I was eligible in the 1st place. They have a form for everything! Q G1. I'm eligible for a 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit but did not claim it on my 2020 tax return. Do I need to amend my 2020 tax return? (added March 1, 2021) A1. If you didn't claim the credit on your original tax return, you will need to file an Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, Form 1040-X. The IRS will not calculate the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit for you if you did not enter any amount on your original tax return. You can use the Interactive Tax Assistant, Should I File an Amended Return?, to help determine if you should amend your original tax return. If you need to file an amended return to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit, use the worksheet on page 59 of the 2020 instructions for Form 1040 and 1040-SR to determine the amount of your credit. Enter the amount on the Refundable Credits section of the 1040-X and include "Recovery Rebate Credit" in the Explanation of Changes section. If you filed your 2020 return electronically and need to file an amended return, you may be able to file Form 1040-X electronically.
