April 25, 20205 yr Author There was no need whatsoever for this. If you are so concerned about Wentz's health then go sign Jamies, don't waste a high pick on QB and start a national QB controversy all in the same day. The upside here, however remote, pales in comparison to the circus it will bring, not to mention the fact that you passed on players that could have helped you right away. Seriously, the more I think about, the angrier I get. WTF were they thinking here?

April 25, 20205 yr Well, we all talked about the lack of creativity last year, so Howie just paid a big price for a slice of creativity. But Rueben Frank is again, simply wrong. This is not a shot or statement at Wentz. The eagles have shown a fondness for versatility in skill positions and Hurts is versatile. He is talented and versatile and, if they can truly get creative with him, he can bring a certain facet to the offense that Wentz could exploit. I just think that with other real needs, this was not the time or the draft position to start the experiment.

From the moment they got put out the playoffs they have done nothing but contradict themselves, and made convoluted choices. From the OC hunt to the draft has been nothing but head scratching moves for the most part. The media is gonna have a field day with this. Imagine mid September if Wentz has three consecutive bad games. The boo birds will fly. The demand for his benching will fill the radios. The Eagles totally screwed this all up. Couldn't have done worse if they tried

We could have held a referendum on Sudfeld with a 4th rounder. Well we did get a 2nd rounder for Feeley that one time 🙂 Anything is possible

He starts planning out how he is going to hatch the eggs and build a chicken coop and breed the pigs out for years. In 30 days, he dies of starvation, and vultures eat the eggs and pigs. Just make a Taylor Pork roll and egg sammich now, Howie! Um YEAH!

It's a stupid pick. There's no QB controversy. The team stated in 2016 that it was going to prioritize the QB position and depth at the position. That philosophy worked out well in 2017. As Joe Gibbs famously once said - the most important player on your team is the QB. The second most important player on your team is the backup QB. I love this pick in part because Hurts played under Lincoln Riley and is a product of the Air Raid offense. Eagles always look to be cutting edge with an evolving offense. The team (and for that matter Andy Reid, but I digress) learned it's lesson when the WCO offense being run in the 2000's became stale. And Hurts is a gamer who has played very well for high profile programs. Anybody who has watched the Eagles over the past several years understands the importance of depth. Next man up has been the team philosophy - and has worked well for them. I like very much that the QB depth chart is not being neglected. And yes, Wentz has been known to go down, so it's all the more important to make sure the QB position is covered with a quality back up. I was never comfortable with the concept of bringing in a broken down, over the hill Joe Flacco as a backup.

Dave, I'm glad you came to the new board and all, but there's no f'ing way you can spin this clown show of a pick.

April 25, 20205 yr What a garbage take with this article. They just gave Wentz a boatload of money. More money than anyone reading this thread COMBINED will make in a lifetime. The Patriots were able to turn jimmy garoppolo into a 1st round pick, plus he even filled in for Brady (and won them mind you) when Brady missed time due to suspension. You can make the argument that the 2nd most important position on the Eagles (under Wentz) is the backup QB.

April 25, 20205 yr You know, it's not even the idea of drafting a QB to backup Wentz what disappointed me, but rather the use of the 53rd overall pick on a guy while we're supposedly "confident" in our current starter. If the Eagles used their 3rd round comp pick on Hurts or Eason after using their 2nd round pick on a DB, WR, LB, etc... I don't think people would complain as much. Nick Foles himself was the 88th overall pick in 2012 after the Seahawks used their 3rd round pick on Russell Wilson. It was supposedly Howie that told Andy Reid to wait until Round 3 to pick Russell Wilson because he wasn't going to go in Rounds 1-2. How ironic that he uses his 2nd round pick in 2020 on a developmental QB prospect. Had he waited a round, this wouldn't have been such a big controversy, but alas here we are now.

I can understand the Eagles not wanting another Clayton Thorson in the 4th round but Howie there's this thing between the 2nd and 4th round called...the 3rd round, you know the same 3rd round where we landed our Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles.

I don't either. At #103 sure go ahead. I'd still think it's a little pointless but he's a good player, could be really good. But he's not improving this team. QB depth sure but you don't ever want to get to your back up.
