This pick seems to be a Press Taylor pick. He's all about versatility, and he even mentioned in an article about consistently having more than one player on the field that can throw the ball.

For this pick to be worth it, this cannot be a Taysom Hill type scenario, in which 90% of his time is as a weird gadget player with mediocre situational impact. This would have to be a completely blended position. I'm talking about midfield WR screens where Hurts surveys the opposite sideline for an open WR before running through the lane. Midplay pass options in which he is running across the line of scrimmage while Ertz and Raegor are running seams out the back side. Jet passes.

RPOs are kind of a proto-version of this, where the base / central distribution point of the play is static with a pocket QB. This evolution would have to be a drifting play base, from which the ball can go in more dynamic directions than choosing between a slant and a run play. This is also kind of where the league wants to go, a sort of hybrid between football, basketball, and soccer.

Of course, pulling this off would be quite a feat. Not only would it require the group of creative coaches they have, but also the coordination of them by Pederson...management on expert mode here.

With the virus impacting offseason prep, I can only see this possibly taking hold in 2021 anyways.

Time's yours...

Yeah bad pick.

I agree if it works out Howie will be labeled a genius and so will doug. However, this seems to be the case with everything they do. They're always looking to break trends or prove their way of football is superior to others and its just arrogance honestly. The move in theory is a great one but you make this move if you're a SB caliber team, we're not. We have several holes and this just feels like 2 great of a risk

It sounds like they're wanting to have more options in the plays.  They now have 18 different offensive coaches instead of an OC and look like they're copying the Chiefs in having small playmakers and the Saints and Ravens in having #2 QB that can rotate in and do gadget plays.

This had potential to be a great draft and there were players on the board for them.  If this doesn't work, Howie might lose his job.

It won't work because there's not enough talent for it to work.

I just don’t see the situation where this offense becomes significantly better because of gadget plays with Hurts. I’m sure it will work on occasion, but not to justify a second rounder.

Plus it will take Wentz out of whatever rhythm he’s in.

Horrible pick.

Trying to think of all the side benefits they are thinking about:

High end backup QB

       -for cheap

Possible Ultra-Gadget player

Confidence in getting 1st + 2nd Round pick value in investment

Gives Wentz a few off-downs per game

What else?

There's no high side here. None at all. Because if he has to play then that's bad because Wentz is hurt again.

What everybody seems to be forgetting... who have we watched finish the season the last 2 yrs?  NOT Carson Wentz. Watching a 41 yr old QB last year was enough for me and apparently enough for the front office.  *IF*...God forbid... Wentz goes down...we will have very young capable backup QB.. and I'm not mad at that at all.

Then don't give Carson that monster deal if toy have reservations.

Just no. There is no putting lipstick on this pig.

Why would we want him off the field and taken out of his rhythm?

The problem with your analysis is that Hurts sucks. If you wanted a quality back up Flacco was available, why waste a pick. Drafting a QB in round 2 undercuts the QB you just gave 100 million to.

I didn’t read your 6 paragraph post but you really think Press Taylor has this much say to draft a QB in the 2nd round?  No chance.

You dont draft a Backup QB in round 2. Howie just started a QB controversy and stuck it to his 100 million dollar man.

Bingo. Another QB controversy. Even if it's not within the locker room it will be by fans and by the media. It's a storm he didn't need to create.

LOL that's a big problem about this for me. They are drafting luxury while there's still NEEDS

I hope not

Yep and really good players were there to help address that.

I thought of another scenario where this might be considered smart instead of going full r/e/t/a/r/d.

Two different offenses for one team. Half of football is coaches game planning. If you have two different styles of offense, albeit under loosely similar philosophies, and a 12 formation thats designed to look the same for each play, you could do the Hurts offense against teams like New England last year or another team with a soft middle of the defense, and the traditional elsewhere. As an opposing team, you might game plan one way while the Eagles plan another with the different QB catering to the defense's weakness, etc.

100 million for a part time QB. Excellent strategy.

I don't disagree it was wierd to give Carson that pay day. and then draft a QB in the 2nd. But ..maybe they found out something we don't know,.. AFTER they paid him.

And the "Hurts sucks" thing??.. yeah some people said the same thing about a guy named Nick Foles.

So make the offense learn 2 different offenses?

Look at this:

ULM_2QB_roll_left.gif

And imagine a QB that can go either side, bomb it deep, and is an actual run threat. QB handoff run option in split formation, where he can run, pitch outside at the perimeter, or pass, all while getting it handed off...

The question is why Hurts specifically over some UDFA, and why then? There was speculation he could go in the 3rd before us, and he's the only one there in the draft spot that could make the play above even more dynamic.

Here's my take. He's either Russell Wilson or the Eagles made a bad pick.

If you have the chance to draft Russell Wilson in the second round, you do it. It doesn't matter who your qb is or what else you need, you don't pass on Russell Wilson in the second round.

If he's not Russell Wilson, then the Eagles messed up.

I am giving him a redshirt year due to a lack of OTAs. But by next preseason, this kid should be looking like the greatest draft steal since...Russell Wilson.
