Arstechnica: "Radical” ruling lets Texas ban social media moderation based on "viewpoint”

The ruling is "startlingly radical," said Corbin Barthold, Internet policy counsel at TechFreedom, a libertarian think tank that filed a brief in the court case. "Social media companies now face the prospect of liability for making distinctions based on 'viewpoint.' (For instance, treating pro-ISIS content differently than anti-ISIS content.) But there are many other difficulties to applying this law. No one—not lawyers, not judges, not experts in the field, not even the law's own sponsors—knows what compliance with this law looks like," Barthold said.

I don't expect this to stand up

Edit: Judges were a couple of 72 and 73 year olds and a Trump appointee who was general counsel for Greg Abbott

ERCOT Asks Texans to Conserve Power Until 8 P.M., Through the Weekend

https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/texas-news/ercot-asks-texans-to-conserve-power-until-8-p-m-through-the-weekend/2967867/

n a statement, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas said, "unseasonably hot weather" was driving record demand across Texas" and that they need everyone to conserve power between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday after six facilities unexpectedly tripped offline Friday afternoon.

HOW TO CONSERVE POWER

  • ERCOT asks all Texans to curb power usage where they can, including raising their thermostat to 78 degrees or higher between the hours of peak usage (3 p.m. to 8 p.m.).
  • ERCOT also asks Texans to not use large appliances like dishwashers or washing machines and dryers during peak times.

ERCOT said six power plants dropped off the grid Friday, resulting in a loss of about 2,900 MW of generation -- that's enough electricity to power roughly 580,000 homes.

Why does the state of Texas have such energy problems?

Other than Biden being president?

Florida woman arrested for throwing a bucket of urine on her neighbor, because her neighbor's chicken was pooping on her patio.

MAY 10--Angered that a neighbor’s chicken had been "pooping on the back patio,” a Florida Woman allegedly retrieved "a bucket of pee from her bathroom” and proceeded to douse the bird’s owner with the foul liquid, according to an arrest report.

Police busted Christine Terman, 57, on a misdemeanor battery charge following a confrontation late Sunday evening at the Palm Haven Mobile Home Park in St. Petersburg.

Cops say Terman, seen at right, was mad at victim Lawrence Stenzel due to "his chicken pooping on the back patio.” So, Terman "went inside and got a bucket of pee from her bathroom, walked out on the back patio and threw the full bucket of pee” at Stenzel.

The bucket struck Stenzel in the face, "causing him pain,” noted a sheriff’s deputy who added that, "the victim was wet when we arrived and smelled of urine.”

The arrest report does not indicate why Terman had a bucket of waste at the ready.

Terman reportedly "admitted to her actions” after being read her rights, Deputy Levi Blake reported. Terman was booked into the county jail, from which she was released yesterday after posting $500 bond.

Terman’s boyfriend, Kevin Avery, 59, was also arrested for allegedly threatening Stenzel in the presence of police. (1 page)

After Michael Calvo, 51, of Cape Coral, Florida, crashed his semitruck into the back of a Publix grocery store in Haines City on May 26, he didn't immediately get out of the cab because, he told an officer, he thought he was being pranked for a reality TV show. When the officer was able to remove Calvo from the truck, Fox13-TV reported, he asked if he had fallen asleep or suffered a medical emergency, to which Calvo answered, "I was smoking my meth pipe." Calvo was arrested on multiple charges, although the deputy police chief did express his appreciation for Calvo's honesty

Just your average Republican.

Man hurls racist, anti-Semitic remarks at an interracial couple on morning walk in Houston

https://news.yahoo.com/houston-man-hurls-racist-remarks-003247317.html

Andy Tran and his fiancée were walking with their dogs in Westchase when a man started hurling hate speech at them on Tuesday.

"My bells were getting a little rattled, but we were trying to ignore him,” Tran told The Houston Chronicle. "We were also thinking it was a joke at first, because this has never happened to us.”

Tran, who is Asian, and his fiancée, who is white, initially ignored the man. However, Tran decided to record the verbal attack when he saw the man walking toward them. He has since posted the video to Reddit’s "Public Freakout” forum, where it has been upvoted over 72,000 times.

Take your Jewish technology and film me, boy,” the man said. "Come at me, I’ll beat the F out of you.”

The man, who wore a green "Be Someone” shirt, a hat and sunglasses, hurled racist remarks used against Asian and Black people, according to Tran. The couple said he also used anti-Semitic language and called Tran’s fiancée a "white ****.”

"He was basically going through the whole racist rhetoric book,” Tran said. "He was saying a lot of slurs the first time.”

"What are you? ****? Mexican? I don’t know what the F you are,” the unidentified man said before the recording ends.

Tran filed a police report through the Houston Police Department’s non-emergency line after 5 p.m. on Tuesday. While it is unclear if the incident will be considered a crime, the police are currently investigating the incident as "an assault by threat.”

One child was treated at Bartlett Regional Hospital, and two others were picked up from the school and may have sought medical attention.

How in the flippity F can this happen?

This is the same generation that posts eating tide pods on social media.  This doesn't shock me at all.

95-year-old WWII vet says mail ballot application denied twice under new Texas voting law

https://www.salon.com/2022/01/28/95-year-old-wwii-vet-says-mail-ballot-application-denied-twice-under-new-texas-voting-law/

Quote

Texas World War II veteran has said his mail-in ballot application was rejected twice due to new Republican voting restrictions, according to KPRC-TV in Houston.

Kenneth Thompson, 95, told the outlet that he fears the new Republican voting law, SB 1, could prevent him from voting for the first time in his life.

"I've been voting many, many years and I've never missed a vote," Thompson told the station, recalling paying a poll tax to vote in the 1950s.

The new Texas law, which includes numerous restrictions on ballot access, requires voters to submit their driver's license number or a partial Social Security number, which election clerks then have to match to their voter registration. But more than 100,000 voters in the state do not have either number on file, and more than 700,000 do not have at least one of the numbers on file, according to the Texas secretary of state's office.

"He registered to vote in the 1940s and they didn't require that," Thompson's daughter, Delinda Holland, told KPRC.

Thompson said his application was denied twice because of the new requirement but Harris County election officials did not notify him of the rejection until he called to inquire both times.

This is pathetic, but this is the new GOP. Voter suppression, even of veterans, if just par for the course.

My buddy is in Florida fishing right now. I posted a video in another thread of a big gator taking a fish from him. He just sent me a video of him going back to the same spot and hitting the gator on the head with a lure a bunch of times.

I think the Florida man is rubbing off on him..

Florida provided a whole hand.
