Just found out my son doesn’t want to go to his scouting event until lunchtime on Saturday which means I’ll be able to get out in the woods for a couple of hours. Original plan was to get to the event at 7:30 to sign in and spend the entire day there.

Easily my favorite season I was going to take those 2 days off and go to camp but I don’t want to burn that much vacation time so I’m going to hunt locally and just take a few hours off each morning. Already cleared it with my boss so I can time my hint based on the action and just submit my leave request whenever I get to my computer.
April 29, 20223 yr Turkey is the one thing I never got into. I do want to bag one one day, but it's not on the top of my list. However, next Saturday is my birthday, so I'm buying a bunch of different meats, smoking them all day, having my buddies over and watching the Phillies, maybe sixers, and the UFC fight. It's gunna be a long but good day.

I just started really hunting them a few years ago and I absolutely love it. Haven’t gotten one yet, but there is a ton of action and adrenaline when you find a bird going crazy on the roost.

I have 2 buddies that usually go out once or twice with me in the morning but not until after they get a bird so it is usually at least the 2nd week when birds are already getting call shy. And I’m hunting state game lands almost exclusively. This year I have a new job so I won’t have as much time to get out (more freedom to take off whenever I want but not enough leave time accrued yet) as I have the past couple of years. And my saturdays are almost all booked.

And my saturdays are almost all booked. It took me about 4 years to bag my first 1 by myself (it was a jake) that was a long time ago. I hunt both private and public land. When I hunt public I look for steep high terrain that most knuckleheads are too lazy/out of shape to climb. But after a bit you will get to the point that you will be able to call them just about anywhere. Anyhow good luck !

Yeah, the grounds that I hunt there is private ground right adjacent to the game lands and they usually roost on the private. So I’m already starting at a disadvantage in not having the best access to them so I usually hike more than 2 miles back in the mountain away from the public land early in the season figuring people are more likely to chase the close easy birds. And it has generally worked out as long as there are birds roosted back there.
May 3, 20223 yr Had 2 strutting just over a rock line for 40 minutes this morning. One finally peeked over and there was a sapling directly in front of his head blocking my shot. He saw there wasn’t a hen, clucked, and turned and walked away. I’m pretty confident that if I’d had someone calling set up behind me he would have committed and taken at least another step which is all I needed him to do. Oh well, try again next time I can get out…

I hunted the same spot Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday mornings. Saturday and Tuesday I was solo and birds were going nuts on the roost. Gobbles in every direction. Monday a buddy went with me to try to call one in for me. Heard a few gobbles but nothing close and they were all in private ground so we couldn’t really pursue them well. Same thing happened when he tried to help me out last year too.

It's all about the hens. Sometimes if you wait until 10 am or so on a quiet morning like that then hens will leave the gobblers and the gobblers will fire back up

May 4, 20223 yr fun story. the first time i went for turkey was up at the old cabin me and my family belonged to. it was the day after my 18th birthday. i went up to the top of the hill into the woods on my own and my brother and dad went out closer to the cabin (they hunted together cause my brother was only 14.) so about 11-1130 i come out of the woods and wander down the woodline through a couple fence rows. got through one fence row and saw a bird about 80 yards away, maybe 20 yards out of the woods in the field. i dropped to the ground, army crawled to a tree and tried to get eyes back on the bird. he was still and the same spot so i started calling. it answered back, but wasnt gobbling. thought it was probably a hen but couldnt tell. i tried creeping a couple trees closer and then crawled up to some grass to get a better look. about that time i saw a big orange flag get unfolded behind the bird and realized my dad and brother had seen me coming down the hill and decided to F with me. so yeah, i hunted a decoy for 20 minutes

May 4, 20223 yr My Saturdays are filled with working out in the morning, spending as much time as possible with my dog, doing some grilling if I can, trying to relax, reading, drinking wine and some vodka, ..................and maybe pay a little attention to my wife. Nothing too exciting, LOL. Our Community swimming pool opens up in a month so that will be another thing we do on Saturdays and Sundays, head there for a few hours each day if the weather is good. We are paying for it $$$$, so we might as well use it as much as we can. Best day of the week, that Saturday is.
