I find hockey to be incredibly boring. Glad I'm not the only one. It used to be my favorite sport when I was a kid because it was so much like pro wrestling with the big personalities, hitting, and fighting. Now its soccer on skates and boring as hell.

I hate hockey fights. They're boring. A couple of punches then off to the box you go. If you want to watch a real fight, see MMA or wrestling or something where they really fight.

Am I the only one that saw the WNBA commercials during NBA playoffs blaming people for not watching the WNBA?

This is one of the greatest moments in Philly sports....

You’re not woke enough for the WNBA.

So is the consensus that the WNBA sucks, this ad campaign is stupid and the WNBA owes Zucker an apology for hurting his feelings?

Or maybe they’d run for governor of California...   as a Republican.

Oh, so you were interested. Well, if you've actually heard any chatter about the subject prior to the one SI article Zuker posted, you'd know he is correct. The WNBA and people promoting it have actually gone with the shaming SJW route in trying to convince people to watch. There have been many women players speaking out about the pay gap. There was a public feud between Draymond Green and Megan Rapinoe over the subject. Here are a few headlines all from this year:

Even the article that you say Zuker didn't read has a similar tone. It's not that the WNBA is a bad product, it argues, it's because of society that no one watches. So yeah, you totally missed the mark here.

So you want to talk pay gap?

It's about money and sponsorship. NFL players make so much money not only because they can get 70,000+ butts in seats in every stadium every Sunday. They can sell ads: beer companies, car companies, insurance, prescription meds, movie trailers.... You name it, everybody hitches onto the NFL game because it generates such an audience they can sell something. Those bids for spots are competitive, so the price goes up and up....

Women's sports needs to grow. I heard Rapinoe or Sue Bird complaining how they can make more money doing an ad for Nike, or a speaking gig for a company, than they make in salary. There you go! There's the audience! Approach them for sponsorship to grow the sport. Men's professional sports players weren't always rich. Back in the day they'd have second jobs in the offseason to make ends meet. But they've had many decades to grow. Women's sports are behind but they can start now.

The reason women sports have no sponsors is because of no audience. The reason they have no audience is because the product sucks.

They can start now, but they need a male audience if they want to get where they want to go.  And obviously they're never going to get that because why would a man watch the WNBA when the regular NBA is, and always will be, vastly more exciting?

It's just not like a new sports league, where there's room to pick up an audience once they understand and get to know the game.  Everyone already knows about basketball, but there's a superior product out there so the scope is limited.  It would be like expecting the G-League to one day rival the NBA, except it's even less likely because at least the G-League contains players that have or will one day play in the NBA.

And honestly, all of that is why they would use a 'guilt the audience' angle in their marketing and why there's so much SJW talk surrounding the WNBA.  Because those are appeals to women and a female audience is the only place where they have room to pick up fans.

The WNBA is the most galling and offensive example of affirmative action/wokeness in recent times. NBA teams are forced to lose millions in the name of political correctness to support a product for which there is almost zero demand. Why is there zero demand??? Because it is a vastly inferior product. But because of feelings, we have to put these teams in NBA arenas, lose millions while no one comes and put this on TV as a loss leader.

An actual women's sports league would start the way men's sports did -- in smaller arenas that they could actually operate profitability. They'd build an audience organically and try to see if there is demand for women's sports. But no...we need to put them at MSG right away and lose money because if we don't, it's sexism. And then if I don't watch an inferior product, it's because I'm a chauvinist. You can't skip right to being a massive league without building an actual audience.

The only more galling and ridiculous example in sports is Megan Rapinoe. Hey Megan -- get the same TV rights fees for the Women's World Cup as the men's, and then talk to me.

Right. No one is arguing any of that, except for maybe the last part about room for growth. The point of the entire thread was criticizing the ad campaign and the growing number of women athletes who are complaining that it's our fault/society's fault they are compensated and watched less than men's sports.

They have no interest in this. Pay them the same NOW or you are sexist.

I'll bring the white wine!

I'd rather watch Siriani play rock-paper-scissors with draft prospects.

(Insert WNBA players should scissor each other for ratings comment here)

this will be full of generalities but the vast majority of sports fans are men....and most men don't enjoy women's sports.  well, unless there are hot chicks involved like beach volleyball or a handful of female tennis players & golfers over the years. i know that's very un-woke to say but it's damn true.

There are more women than men in the country. If they wanted to support their own pro sports leagues they could. Women don't want to watch this crap either.

Don't hang out too long or your periods could sync up and attract bears.

That’s the real danger of watching women’s sports right there - developing a menstrual cycle.
