Philadelphia Eagles were smart to bring in 2 reliable backup QBs

Having a backup quarterback is huge for NFL teams and the Philadelphia Eagles set themselves up nicely in that situation. Not only did they bring Joe Flacco in over the offseason but they also recently agreed to a contract with former 49ers quarterback Nick Mullens.

Flacco and Mullens both being on the Eagles’ roster this year will be huge because fans are still unsure of what to expect from Jalen Hurts as he enters his first official year as a starter. He entered last year as the backup to Carson Wentz and well — We all know how that ended up.

Despite the Eagles covering their tracks by signing two established veteran backups in Flacco and Mullens, they were in the lower half of CBS Sport’s list of backup quarterback situations, coming in at No. 23. Cody Benjamin, the author of the article, offered this analysis on Flacco:

The Super Bowl MVP days are so far gone they feel like they’re from a separate career for Flacco, now 36. He’s immobile and conservative, but the arm is still mostly intact and he’s got literally 175 games of starting experience. You can do worse.

Flacco isn’t the same quarterback he was when he won the Super Bowl with the Ravens but he’s one of the better backup options in the league. Mullens is the better backup option though, as he’s used to being in that role and proved to be one of the better veteran options available in free agency and Philly was lucky to be the team to land him.

The Philadelphia Eagles have dependable backup options behind Jalen Hurts.

Flacco has bounced around quite a bit since his days as a Raven came to an end, spending time with the Broncos in 2019 and the Jets in 2020. The Eagles are his fourth team in as many years but he’s an established backup at this point.

As for Mullens, he was a dependable backup for the 49ers but he has suffered some injuries in recent years. This is the only reason having him as the backup could be worrisome.

Hopefully, the Eagles don’t even have to worry about who their backup signal-caller is. There’s still a lot of unknown with Hurts at the helm but if he balls out this year and stays healthy, Flacco and Mullens shouldn’t see the field much at all and that’s the best-case scenario for Philadelphia.

Signing Flacco made literally no sense. I know $3M isn't a lot of money but given they've just signed Mullens who is an adequate and cheap back up for a team in a rebuild it just makes no sense to tie that money up.

Flacco has been around a few young QBs. He knows the routine and the expectations for himself and can help the young starter with his growth. It makes a lot more sense when you look at our situation. It also helps us in practice to have a dependable arm working with the 2nd team. We had Chase Daniel here on a 3-year, $21 million contract. Flacco makes much more sense.

It makes no sense. Unless this team are actually good this year it makes no sense to invest more than what they are giving to Mullens in the back up QB role.

What is Hurts going to learn from Mullens?

What is Hurts going to learn from Flacco? How to be pretty average and end up as a journeyman back up?

Frank Reich, Doug Pederson, Josh McCown, Mike Kafka, Byron Leftwich, Jason Garrett, Gary Kubiak ...

Yeah ... former non-standout QBs, some of which spent most of their careers as backups clearly have nothing to teach to young players starting out. We didn't bring Flacco in to compete for a starting role. He understands that. He knows at this point in his career, he's here to help the team he's on in all ways. You may not like him or be impressed with him, but even after being on pitiful teams the last 2 years, he still has a winning record as a starting QB (98-77 regular season) and also a 10-5 record in the postseason. He has valuable experience. As I mentioned before, he also is a competent arm in practice that will help the young WRs that aren't on the 1st team.

Flacco has been an NFL QB for 13 years. He has been to the playoffs multiple times and won a Super Bowl. He is on the downside of his career, but has a wealth of NFL experience and knowledge that he can help Hurts with. He can help him with making better decisions on the field, how to read blitz pickups and audible better. He is closer to the field then any coach would be. Nick Mullins would provide absolutely zero input.

They didn't need to do that with Wentz because Doug was that experienced NFL QB. Currently the Eagles have nobody in that role to help Hurts out. Don't give me Brian Johnson, as he has never played QB in the NFL. There is a difference between coaching a QB and learning from an experienced QB.

I mean this is the most logical thing to do - I dont get what the outrage is about this. Was there a player that cost $3 million that they desperately needed that they missed out on because of Flacco?

They could have made another move or two. They could have potentially upped their offer for Nelson whilst still being able to keep Ertz if that's what they wanted to do. $3M for Flacco was just, in my opinion, a bad move.
