It is elemental technology allowing others to see "their" spatial data in the native context of Earth or any other planet for which there is data. Any application, proprietary or other, can use NASA World Wind to see their data in a 3D context.

Just do your science and put down your phone. Eh, I think it was just their optimistic enthusiasm manifested in real time. Live-streaming the furnace has an element of attention whooring to it, but it's also a cool way to get the word out and generate excitement about the process itself. And at the end of the day, if it means more kids get involved and begin to forge (heh) their own careers in science, then it's a net benefit in my view.

October 6, 20232 yr In a First, the FCC Fines a Satellite Company for Abandoning Space Debris The television provider DISH failed to remove a retired satellite far enough from its previous orbit, according to a statement from the commission https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/in-a-first-the-fcc-fines-a-satellite-company-for-abandoning-space-debris-180983012/ Good, there is a serious issue with this crap up there.
October 6, 20232 yr A good first step, but obviously only something applicable to American companies. Domestic solutions to global problems but at least we're trying to do our part.

October 12, 20232 yr The fastest ever human-made object keeps breaking its own speed record At top speed, NASA's Parker Solar Probe could zoom from NYC to LA in just 20 seconds. https://www.popsci.com/technology/parker-solar-probe-speed-record/ Quote According to a recent status update from the space agency, the Parker Solar Probe has broken its own record (again) for the fastest thing ever made by human hands—at an astounding clip of 394,736 mph. The newest milestone comes thanks to a previous gravity-assist flyby from Venus, and occurred on September 27 at the midway point of the probe’s 17th "solar encounter” that lasted until October 3. As ScienceAlert also noted on October 9, the Parker Solar Probe’s speed would hypothetically allow an airplane to circumnavigate Earth about 15 times per hour, or skip between New York City and Los Angeles in barely 20 seconds. Not that any passengers could survive such a journey, but it remains impressive. [Related: The fastest human-made object vaporizes space dust on contact.] The latest pass-by also set its newest record for proximity, at just 4.51 million miles from the sun’s plasma "surface.” In order not to vaporize from temperatures as high as nearly 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit, the Parker Solar Probe is outfitted with a 4.5-inch-thick carbon-composite shield to protect its sensitive instruments. These tools are measuring and imaging the sun’s surface to further researchers’ understanding of solar winds’ origins and evolution, as well as helping to forecast environmental changes in space that could affect life back on Earth. Last month, for example, the probe raced through one of the most intense coronal mass ejections (CMEs) ever observed. In doing so, the craft helped prove a two-decade-old theory that CMEs interact with interplanetary dust, which will improve experts’ abilities in space weather forecasting.
October 12, 20232 yr First-ever gene therapy trial to cure form of deafness begins Researchers hope to transform treatment of auditory neuropathy. Mutations in the OTOF gene can be identified by genetic testing. However, Bance said it was a condition often missed when newborn babies were screened for potential hearing problems. "This is one of the few conditions where everything works except the transmission between the hair cells and the nerve. So everything else looks fine when you test it, but they can’t hear anything. So these poor kids’ [difficulties] end up being missed,” Bance added. The new gene therapy aims to deliver a working copy of the faulty OTOF gene using a modified, non-pathogenic virus. It will be delivered via an injection into the cochlea under general anesthetic. The gold standard treatment for the condition is currently cochlear implants, but they have limitations. They do not filter out background noise in complex hearing environments, such as when multiple people are speaking, often making it difficult to participate in group conversations or to enjoy music. https://arstechnica.com/health/2023/10/first-ever-gene-therapy-trial-to-cure-form-of-deafness-begins/
