The amount of hate the Flacco signing got was completely over the top and ridiculous.

Yep. Flacco is past his prime and not a superstar anymore but he is a solid two at the least. He's won at every level too. SB MVP and all.

@CaliEagle wins the game day thread.

Who is gonna be Sudfeld to Joe Flacco’s Foles ???

I think Sudafed will be available should Hurts get hurt.

Patrick Johnson has looked good. Should be a decent depth guy.

aaaaaaand he’s hurt

Turkey Hill Post of The Day

 not sure why you burn a timeout there. It's over.

OMG Mullens sucks. Maybe Howie can get some rolls of prewrap and a used Gatorade bottle for the guy…

If Mullens is completely useless, maybe they put Tyree Jackson back there and see what he can do.

I was thinking the same thing. He at least would bring more arm strength to the table, as that was the selling point for him coming out of college: tall QB with a strong arm and some mobility. The big con was accuracy. Still thought his physical traits would have at least secured a late round flier from some team rather than going undrafted.

I liked seeing big plays out of the defense even though it is just a bunch of scrubs playing for the most part.

I agree with all of that.  But I think you're underselling his speed / athleticism.   he had a combine 4.59 at 250 pounds.  That's a very high sparq.  He's quite similar to Logan Thomas.

looking at RAS - as a QB he has a RAS of 9.95 out of 10.  As a TE he has a RAS of 9.8,  his number brought down by his 249 weight, average for a Tight End.

The starters beat the Steelers starters, and the Steelers already had played a pre-season game and should have kicked the Eagles starters butts. They didn't- they got beat by the Eagles starters. I'm not really worried about depth right now. When a backup has to play in a regular season game, it's him AND the starters around him. In pre-season, the depth players are NOT surrounded by starters, so you can't get all crazy about what a group of them look like in the 1st pre-season game of the year.

I use preseason to see how our depth is gonna be. I'm not encouraged tonight.

Considering that this is the first preseason game, under a new head coach and a new system..I liked the effort. I think with some individual exceptions, the team played well. Our starters dominated Steelers starters. Looking forward for marginal improvement, in the second game. So far so good.

I really hope they figure out how to keep using Watkins during the season.

Still getting used to these number changes.

Only saw the first half live and I’m optimistic. Yes, I know it’s only a preseason game and the score and record doesn’t actually matter when it’s all said and done but I felt the DL was very good with Alex singleton picking up where he left off. Ertz should have caught that pass from hurts. Jalen reagor will hopefully improve on last nights performance. Watkins was excellent and the speed he had for the TD was amazing and could have had another early on when he seemed to mistime his run to catch the ball from hurts.

Ummm....Hurts underthrew and didn't put enough air on that ball.  Watkins did everything he could.  Just sayin'......

Fair enough. I only watched it live and haven’t rewatched it yet today but the ball landed in front of Watkins and he seemed to not get a clear run down the sideline.

If you see that first step as a QB where you know the WR has the DB beat, you have to put some air under the ball to allow the WR to break free, run and then catch.  It's no big deal, it is a really hard throw/timing/etc.  But if Hurts had lofted it a bit more, with Watkins speed once he broke free....then it would have been a long TD.  Just something for them to work on.......

Yes but the thing is timing can be worked on. I mean with Watkins and smith on the field this season at the very least we won’t be a easy to defend against. And Watkins scored on a WR screen which was a nice surprise. As I said it’s only one game and a small sample size for players but IMO there’s signs to be optimistic.

Absolutely....Smith, Watkins, Reagor, Godert are all key young players to move forward with.  Definitely better than trying with some of the dreck we've had here recently.  I look at this season as one to watch from the perspective of young players growing and performing, watching the coaching staff and hoping that you see the team come together as the season goes on.......and this might be sacrilege, but with the pics we have next year.....if they aren't making the playoffs.....go 4-13 but be in every game.  Oh......and let's find out, can Hurts actually be an NFL QB or....do we have to draft one next year.  I'm praying that he can be a semblance of Prescott, because drafting a QB high in the first round is an absolute crap shoot.  I'd rather use those 4 picks in rounds 1 and 2 to get impact players in other areas.

I don’t think it’s sacrilege, but I do think you will be disappointed if you are rooting for them to win only 4 games.  They’re in a weak division with the easiest ranked strength of schedule and this is far from a talent-free roster.  They may not be a .500 team, but I’ll be surprised if they are not at least pretty close.

That "new punter guy" I had never heard of before- the Australian, Arryn Siposs... four punts, 55.8 yard average. Kicked it like a freekin kangaroo. The Kangaroo Kid. Not too shabby.

I wasn't impressed by Sipiss. He had a few kicks he could have dropped inside the 10 but didn't

In contrast, the Steelers punter did that no problem

Hi all

Your man Mailata  is a beast and is playing VERY well. The second 1/2 didn't really matter, because 3rd string players who aren't all that good played.
