Howie: Conversation with Wentz about Hurts was "not comfortable"

What the hell has Howie gotten us into? Not only do we now have a national story about our QB situation for the next few years, but now our QB who's already navigated a QB controversy and a locker-room dissension storyline has another quandary to deal with. So much for Carson being on board with this pick, nothing but drama ahead.

Listening to the whole thing in context, it can really go either way. He could have been referring to it not being comfortable going into the conversation to begin with. We don’t know how Wentz took it after explanation. It’s possible that was not good either.

Still not the decision I would have made, but this can be very good for us, or very bad for us.

Howie is a business man. He’s not a football guy by any stretch of the imagination. He does not understand anything about team chemistry and should not be allowed anywhere near the draft room.

I don't really see the problem with it. It probably was uncomfortable to let Wentz know they were going to draft a QB, but it is what it is.

We needed a back up. The football season is getting longer, there's a pandemic and if we're being honest, Wentz hasn't thrown the final pass for the Eagles in 3 seasons now. He's had an injury every single year, to some degree, for his entire career and even prior to that in college.

I like Wentz. I'm happy he's our QB and wouldn't change that. He's smart enough to understand that this is a business, though. He has to know what went into the decision. If he's that mentally fragile (which I don't believe) then he shouldn't be playing the sport.

Howie needs to worry about the Eagles as a whole, not just Wentz.

This is being spun the wrong way here for sure. Howie was saying having the conversation it self and making the selection for a QB that high is what was uncomfortable. Not that Wentz made the conversation uncomfortable.  It was uncomfortable taking a backup QB when there was more talent available at other positions. But he made the uncomfortable discussion to do the right thing(in his opinion) by protecting the QB position.

🤷‍♂️I took it as him admitting they got Hurts for insurance because Wentz gets injured a lot

Agreed yeah. We've all had to have difficult conversations with people in our own lives. You go in feeling uncomfortable and you don't know which way it'll go.

Exactly. Wentz could be very open to it. He might think he’s already got his contract and Hurts could help him stay healthy taking some of the plays. We just don’t know without knowing his side of the conversation.

Trade Wentz to Dallas for their 2021 6th.  Problem solved.

Howie: They (fans) want to win right now but I have a different job.

Apparently that job is to prepare for life without the guy you just signed long term. The Eagles are so good right now that we have the luxury of building tomorrows team today. They want "two of the top ten" QBs on the roster. Never mind that your LBs are hot garbage, let's lock up two starting QBs.

But this is nothing new.  Having two starting-caliber QBs has been part of their game plan going back to the McNabb-Kolb_Vick era.

Chip Kelly, please stop posting on this board

I always try to back an Eagles player, coach, front office person, etc, until they keep doing the wrong or stupid things over and over, and it finally hits you- they are not going to change- the refuse to change. THEN I turn on them, and that's it. Chip Kelly was a good example. I thought his philosophy was weird, but I backed him- carefully. Then he got rid of some prime players, and I was like-whoaaaa, wait. I forget the exact incident that had me clearly see he was not a good person or coach, and that he treated people like shi*. When I turned on him, that was it- no going back. Howie got me to that point with him making seriously bad decisions about personnel, over and over again. The 1st pick got me red hot this year, and I said "One more stupid pick from you, and you are Chip Kelly, ahole!" Then came the second round pick.... Howie is now Chip Kelly to me, and there is no going back. Get that ahole away from personnel decisions if you keep him at all. I'm done with a numbers crunching-non football guy. He started bragging how fast the receivers are that he took... but didn't mention that late round players are LATE round for a reason. F this nut case.

Because ti showed a profound lack of support for Wentz, because Hurts won't benefit the team as much as multiple other options would have, and because it wasn't even a good thing for Hurts' career path, it was the stupidest pick in my lifetime.

There's no way this works out. This is going to end with Wentz somewhere else.

That would be a disaster.

Typical headline focusing on the negative. Howie also said they believe in Carson and that he will win a championship for them.

He had a lot of praise for Carson in the press conference after drafting Hurts.

And also I mean let's be honest here I'm sure Carson isn't happy. I'm sure he'd have preferred that pick to have been a weapon on offense or even defense. Not because he fears losing the starting job but because in a best case scenario Hurts does nothing to help the team on the field.

True. But they did at least draft 3 receivers, trade for one, and draft 2 Ol

Wentz isn’t stupid.

Fans can blind themselves all they like - but the Eagles clearly want another option as a potential franchise Quarterback. If Wentz stays healthy and plays well - Hurts get traded.

If Wentz gets another significant injury and Hurts plays well - most likely Wentz gets traded.

Wentz has every right to be annoyed.

For what? He was drafted in the 2nd round. Would have been better if he was drafted in the 5th or something and traded for a 3rd or something
