time2rock Posted October 28, 2021 Posted October 28, 2021 NFL Draft expert says who Eagles should get with 2022 1st-round pick to replace Jalen Hurts Updated: Oct. 28, 2021, 6:51 a.m. | Published: Oct. 28, 2021, 6:47 a.m. By Mike Rosenstein | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com Thanks to Howie Roseman’s wheeling and dealing, the Philadelphia Eagles could have as many as three first-round picks in the 2022 NFL Draft. ESPN’s Todd McShay thinks the Eagles general manager needs to use one of those selections on a new franchise quarterback. McShay joined ESPN’s "Get Up!” on Wednesday and explained why the Eagles need to move on from Jalen Hurts and who Philadelphia should target in the draft. "Listen, Jalen Hurts, he’s played within the system and I wouldn’t say he’s the biggest reason why the Eagles are struggling. But I don’t think he’s the answer moving forward if you’re trying to build a championship roster and trying to make a legitimate run at the Super Bowl. So if they’re in position to get Malik Willis, who has emerged as the No. 1 clear-cut quarterback in this year’s class coming out of Liberty, I think they have to make that pick. He’s a bigger, mobile version. You know, both guys, Hurts and Willis, have mobility, but I think he creates more and he’s more dynamic throwing the ball on the run and throwing the ball down the field than Hurts has been in his first couple of years with the Eagles. "So I think they go quarterback if they have the opportunity to take Willis with that first pick, whatever that pick number-wise ends up being. And maybe they use one of their other first-round picks, they’ve got three in the first round coming up in 2022, to move up and go get Willis to make sure they can get ahead of some other teams that might have interest.” Hurts will continue to make his case for being the Eagles’ franchise quarterback on Sunday when Philadelphia visits the Detroit Lions. And while I have nothing against small college players, they have not faced the top teams, so IMO I would choose someone else who has been "battle tested" 1
birdman#12 Posted October 28, 2021 Posted October 28, 2021 If you want to win a super bowl, you have to draft and DEVELOP a pocket passer that has good pocket awareness and movement who can occasionally scamper for a few yards. When a QB is a good runner and he's under pressure, he won't go thru all his read and he will run too soon....Instead of looking downfield, he'll look for open space.... I want a QB who will constantly keep his eyes downfield with pass first thinking.......A QB can do more damage passing than running. The QBs who have played over the last 25 years, the ones who were primarily pocket passers, have higher winning pctg, highest QBRs, won more super bowls..... Lamar Jackson has been very good in the regular season, but terrible in the playoffs. The NFL GMs and coaches get all wrapped up in the dual threat illusion.....but the numbers still show that a pocket passer is still the best route to a super bowl. 3

PoconoDon Posted October 28, 2021 Posted October 28, 2021 There doesn't appear to be any QB prospect worthy of an early pick in the 2022 draft. To take one out of need is a HUGE mistake. To use two or more picks to trade up for one of these average guys in the 1st round is player personnel suicide. McShay is nuts. 4

Give me the guy who excels at passing (accuracy, throwing with anticipation, being able to go through all of his reads, seeing the field well, etc.) but may not have as much mobility over a QB who is somewhat weak in those areas but can use his legs extremely well. If they have both then all the better, but if choosing between the 2, I take the former 24/7/365. 3

I would like to see us use 2 of our 1st rd picks on defensive players and trade down with another (perhaps to late 1st picking up a 2023 1st and perhaps a 2022 2nd or 3rd, depending on how far we trade down). I wouldn't hate it if we used either a late 1st (that we would pick up from the trade down) or our own early 2nd on someone like Pickett, but taking him in the top half of the 1st would be a reach. He intrigues me. 2

I agree, there are none I would reach or trade for. I'm thinking like Ridder with the LAST round 1 pick or first 2nd. This is a pretty weak class coming, nothing like last year. A few nice linemen and DB's and WR's but after round 2 the talent falls off pretty badly. Even round 2 is "shaky"

He threw for 4,000 yards with NO receivers Over 500,is that Wentz's fault??? How many dropped passes did he deal with that were ON THE MONEY?

How many deep passes did you see the receiver have to slow down and turn into a defender to prevent an INT or the ball sailed an extra 5 yards past him? Wentz was not accurate … just stop. 1

Look... If people want to talk themselves in to Willis then fine. I'm still not fully on board but I can understand the appeal. But to give up one of our other first round picks to move up? I mean firstly, no! And secondly, I'm not sure that will be necessary? We could have a top 3 pick via the Dolphins. I guess the risk would be if Detroit is ahead of them? Or I guess another team moving up. But still I'm not sure I'd give up another first round pick to get any of these QBs. A high first round pick already feels more than enough. 1
weko Posted October 29, 2021 Posted October 29, 2021 Key to be a good drafting team is not just to pick good players but to also get good VALUE. QBs always go earlier than they should but you can’t draft one just to take one if he is next up value wise relative to others on the board
DeathByEagle Posted October 29, 2021 Posted October 29, 2021 I wouldnt touch Willis in the first 2 days of the draft. No Thank you. He is Jalen Hurts 2.0 who plays for a school who has no real competition. Let another team take the chance on this kid early.

I think the point he was trying to make is, if you have a choice between an elite talent at DE or a QB that is pretty good but not nearly as good an overall talent as the DE but the QB is rated higher than he should be because (1) the position tends to be rated higher in general relative to other positions and (2) he is one of the better players in a weak class at his position, then it makes sense to take the DE. And IMO he is right ... that is the better way to build a winning roster.

What matters is if the player can play and produces for you. If a team drafts a player that is pegged to be a UDFA by the pundits in the second round and that player becomes an all pro, does it matter in the long run where they drafted him as long as he is a member of the team?

If a team drafts a player that is pegged to be a UDFA by the pundits in the second round and that player becomes an all pro, does it matter in the long run where they drafted him as long as he is a member of the team? Most important is positional valuation. The premium picks determine whether you will be a good team or not and these players can not often be traded for or signed as free agents. 1) QB 2) LT 3) CB & DE 4) RT & DT. Good drafters focus on these positions in the 1st and 2nd rounds and into the 3rd. Next comes interior O line and skill positions. You can get excellent value here in rounds 3-4 and sometimes 5. Then everyone else. As your team gets better you have the luxury of considering good players in lesser valued positions earlier in the draft. that's a good blue print for how the rich get richer. As for player value, there is nothing wrong with drafting a player you love a bit early. But you don't take a player with a 4th-5th round grade (Whiteside) in the 2nd round. Trade down and get more picks then take the player a bit early if you really like him.
