Who has better quarterback future: Giants or Eagles? Ex-GM weighs in on Daniel Jones, Jalen Hurts

The Giants and Eagles are two of four teams — along with the Jets and Lions — with multiple first-round picks in next year’s NFL Draft, and those premium selections could greatly impact their quarterback depth charts in April.

Giants quarterback Daniel Jones and Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts have shown flashes of brilliance and befuddlement during their short NFL careers.

Jones, the sixth overall pick in 2019, has thrown for 43 touchdowns in 36 games, but he’s also turned the ball over 47 times in that span. Hurts, a second-round pick last year, has sprinted out of former franchise quarterback Carson Wentz’s shadow by showing elite running ability with 547 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns this season. However, he’s also proved to be a work-in-progress as a passer.

That’s why NJ Advance Media turned to former Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whaley to figure out which team has the better quarterback setup for the future. With multiple first-round picks, the Giants and Eagles will have opportunities to upgrade their most important position next offseason. But Whaley says one of the squads already has a much more favorable outlook.

"Philly, absolutely,” Whaley told NJ Advance Media on Wednesday. "With Jalen, even if you get another quarterback, you got a guy on a second-round pick contract. But you also know he’s got some upside because he has shown flashes, he’s just got to be [more] consistent. So you still may have a possibility of him growing into that position.”

Whaley says he’s seen enough from Jones over the past three seasons to feel like he understands who he is as a player.

Jones has started 35 games — compared to Hurts’ 14 starts — and his offense has scored 30 points or more in just three of those matchups. Jones has played for two different head coaches, and neither has been able to get the potential out of him that GM Dave Gettleman saw in the evaluation process.

"To me, Daniel Jones with as many starts as he has, he’s pretty much ‘what you see is what you get,’” Whaley said. "What you’ve seen is what you got. And is that really bad? No. But is it really good enough to take you where you want to go? And he’s on that first-round contract.”

Hurts has led the Eagles to a 4-6 start this season while throwing for 2,159 yards, 13 touchdowns and five interceptions. There are still questions about his accuracy and overall decision-making in the pocket. While he’s protected the ball very well this season — just six turnovers in 10 games — the Eagles’ offense has stalled at times due to Hurts’ growing pains within Nick Sirianni’s system.

That’s why, with three potential first-round picks, the Eagles could try to take another bite of the quarterback apple, even if Hurts leads the team to a winning record in the home stretch of the season. The Eagles will probably give Hurts the rest of the campaign to prove that he can anchor the ship, but Whaley thinks the front office will keep its options open.

According to Whaley, having the option of Hurts — on a cheap contract — or a first-round prospect makes the Eagles’ quarterback situation much more favorable than the Giants’ outlook. The Giants still have Jones on a big deal for at least another year, and they are just three years removed from making a major investment in him.

"If I had to choose, I’d go with Philly, because it doesn’t preclude you from drafting another guy,” Whaley said. "Now the Giants, they could still draft another guy as well, but then you know, that’s another swing. And that’s a nice little first-round chunk of change that you commit to you got two quarterbacks to commit to your salary cap.”

Unfortunately I think the Giants are going to go for a QB this year. Mind you the draft class isn't the best so perhaps that's a good thing.

The more QBs that go early the better ... pushes down some top talent at other positions to our picks.  I'm really hoping Hurts shows enough to at least cause Howie to avoid the temptation to take a QB.  I don't want to draft a QB early (not this year with such an underwhelming QB class) ... really hoping to use our top picks to fortify other positions.

Do you know what... At this point I think Hurts deserves another year. He's better than a number of QBs in the NFL and I'm not sure any of the QBs in the draft are definitely better than him.

Yep, right on.  I don't see anybody in this draft class as a better replacement for Jalen.  Jalen's young, on a team friendly contract and has played well enough to start.

But hey there's still... 6 games to go? A lot can change but I think Hurts is improving.

Add that QB's coming out this year aren't nearly as highly rated as last year and it makes sense to ride with Hurts through next year.

One thing not being discussed is a possible trade for one of the vets who should be on the move - Wilson and Rodgers are likely to be available. One of them for 2 of our 1st round picks would be fine with me. I certainly don't want the guy from Houston.
