January 3, 20223 yr This is why you don’t tank. Because you might have a winning record and you might make the playoffs too. Good job Eagles. Anything can happen in the playoffs if we run the ball.
January 3, 20223 yr So, maybe we get the Tampa Tom Brady's in Round 1. Then we get the Green Bay Aaron Rodgers in the next game. Then the winner of Arizona / Dallas / LA. No problem. SuperBowl!!

We'd get destroyed by the Rams, Packers, and Cowobys for sure.
January 3, 20223 yr Author Anyone see the Vikings scoring 27 unanswered in 7 minutes? Eagles are in the playoffs.

The Eagles have a lot of very good to top of the line oliners. Kelce, Johnson and Mailata are all really tops, with unusually good athleticism which theoretically allows them to do a whole lot of things. Across the board it appears that all the oliners are good. There's no below average PFF oliner out there. Even with Brooks, Seumalo and Driscoll all out, the Eagles have subs who have been playing well and even players sitting who have played well in limited snaps. Lane Johnson - QB, Jason Kelce - RB, Mailata = FB. They all have it on the resume. All 3 could be TEs. I suspect other oliners might have some good resume stuff and top quality athleticism, and even if they don't, theres a good chance they can do the stuff. Dillard is sitting around right now, he ran 4.96 at 315.

Taking these players from their positions to do other things weakens the team as a whole. It’s not easy to play quarterback in the NFL. Lane would absolutely suck at it. Occasional trick plays are fine. Using them on a regular basis would fall apart just like the wildcat did.

We're talking about short yardage and goal line mostly. It is entirely true that those 3 - Kelce, Johnson, Mailata - are great oliners. But the Eagles have, as backups, very good oliners. The idea isn't to remove Hurts. The idea is to remove Reagor in short yardage, run situations. Instead of WR1, WR2, WR3, when the plan is to run in short yardage situations, you look at what you have sitting on the bench. Dillard, Opeta, maybe even Brooks. Little WRs are replaced by big OLs. And the Eagles have those great OLs, who are not only great, they're physically dominant, and they have QB, RB, and rugby on their resumes. Other teams don't have that. Other teams can't do what the Eagles can do. When I'm saying something like Lane Johnson = QB, I'm not saying the Eagles should swap out Hurts, swap in a very good backup at RT (the Eagles do have those players) and then put Lane Johnson in at QB, play after play, dropping back into the pocket and deciding which of 5 guys to throw to. I'm saying that Lane Johnson knows how to take a snap. Lane Johnson can get under center, take the snap, and run forward. Mailata can get behind him and push him forward. Lane Johnson can take the snap and handoff. He can take the snap under center and pitch to Hurts. Green Bay, yesterday, had a pull to push play, where the LT pulled back into the backfield, the QB handed to the RB - Dillon I think, and the LT got behind Dillon, and just pushed the pile, scoring the TD. The Eagles are in great shape to do things like that. Leaving aside all the great OLiners and all the very good backup OLiners, the Eagles also have running QBs, Hurts, Ward, Jackson. The Eagles could mix and match extra OLiners and extra running QBs. At this point, Hurts is not 100%, Howard is not 100%, and Sanders is out with a broken hand. There is more of a surplus of quality at the OL spots and the running QB spot than there is at the running back spots.

We're talking about winning games in the playoffs. What I'm talking about is designed to get the Eagles enough to win games in the playoffs this year.

The Eagles cannot design an offense with the players doing the things you’re requesting them to do in order to get to the playoffs. There wasn’t much asked for backs to do in the wildcat. It was basically a direct snap to them.

The Eagles generally remove their wide receivers in short yardage unless they’re spreading people out. Ultimately I don’t see much of a point to take the ball out of the hands of a player (excluding Reagor) who is used to handling the ball for one who isn’t.

The Eagles have 2 weeks to come up with some interesting stuff to get them wins, if they haven't already done that. Lane Johnson has caught a TD pass, so it's not like the Eagles aren't already doing the general types of things that I'm suggesting. The point I was making was that the Eagles weren't going to be innovating with the idea of developing a new offense that will work permanently and forever. You said something like "the wildcat was solved", and that's true, but it worked long enough. I'm suggesting that the Eagles don't need something that works permanently. The Eagles currently have a lot of healthy oliners right now, ranging from very good to best. I'd rather see those very good to best players out there instead of 3 WRs, when those WRs are sometimes below average.

We might be somewhat close to some agreement here. If bigs are in, and WRs are out in short yardage situations, that's something I want. Lane Johnson is used to handling the ball, now.

Making a player who’s isn’t working at one position and converting him to another is one thing. Making a guy do something he’s not comfortable doing to create some new style of offense by taking a player who is good at one thing to make him do something consistently he’s not good at is just asking for serious trouble. I highly doubt you see Sirianni do anything like that.

Our offence isn’t built for a shootout and can take a while to get going based on recent precedents so the D will need to step up and force some non-scoring possessions over the course of a game.

Our defense isn’t built to stop wood to great quarterbacks, but the defense actually is operating the way it is supposed to with mostly holding teams to 3 instead of giving up six. Granted most of that happened against far lesser quarterbacks. I do think offensively the Eagles have changed though and can now dictate to other teams the pace of the game with their run first offense. Some of these great quarterbacks they faced in the past haven’t had to wait on the sidelines while the Eagles just bash their defense with the run and play action. This probably doesn’t faze a guy like Brady or Rodgers, but it absolutely could effect guys like Stafford, Murray, and Prescott. Side note though. The last time the Eagles beat Brady or Rodgers they ran the ball for over 100 yards against their teams.
