Thinking back on the SR-71, a lot of defense analysts suspected the US was working on a high speed plane, but it was never actually confirmed before LBJ revealed it on the campaign trail. Could be a case that the Aurora was cancelled and just kept under wraps. I think, at most, there may have been a technology demonstrator that was never meant to become operational, much like the Tacit Blue program.
