Toastrel Posted December 8, 2021 Posted December 8, 2021 Supreme Court weighs mandating public funds for religious schools in Maine https://www.npr.org/2021/12/08/1061996765/supreme-court-weighs-mandating-public-funds-for-religious-schools-in-maine This is a pickle. On the one hand, from personal experience, private schools, like say Catholic Schools, are generally much better centers for learning than the average public school. On the other, if you allow this, then do we have to fund Scientology schools, Muslim schools and Flat Earther schools? Talk about your slippery slopes.
we_gotta_believe Posted December 8, 2021 Posted December 8, 2021 Uh no, we shouldn't use public funds to frame religious dogma as objective fact. If the last two years have taught us anything it's that we have enough issues with the average American being unable to separate science from theology as it is. 2
toolg Posted December 8, 2021 Posted December 8, 2021 Religious schools must understand that public funding comes with stipulations - against hiring discrimination and students (they cannot favor any religion, sexual orientation, etc.). Also standards about what is being taught. If they accept public funding they must adhere to the same regulations. Do they really want to accept government intervention in their school operations?
