It was ugly stale football, the offense the last 3 years was a stuttering mess, rescued by the worst division in the NFL letting him stumble into the playoffs until they couldn't, we were **** to watch.

I respect your opinion on it. I just feel like it was a lot going on in a negative way for Doug. Things that were beyond his control.

It says favorite coach, not best. My favorite is Andy, offense was almost always exciting. The last few years we have been so painful to watch. I never really felt that way with Andy. Also was the coach as I was growing up, being so young

I was a kid when Buddy was here and I thought he was great then.

I actually kinda liked Ray Rhodes too.

But after years and years of Andy I became so familiar with him it was almost like another member of the family.

Doug I can't help but view as an extension of Andy as opposed to a separate character of his own.

Doug has to be the answer here right?  First championship that I would imagine anyone posting here would remember

maybe but..not necessarily..more and more it looks like that entire 2017 team was a fluke..and Doug caught lightning in a bottle..so many things went right that year...and truth be told...I don't think Wentz would have beaten Brady in the SB...so a negative (Wentz's injury) also turned into a positive..Foles playing and winning... it was in retrospect a "one off"

whereas (pre Howie) Andy always put a competitive team on the field every year..with a couple exceptions, of course,,,but even when the seasons looked in jeopardy, Andy almost always found a way to salvage a playoff appearance..sure he only got to the SB once,  but from 2000 -2009 (again pre Howie) you could look at his teams and count on 10 wins at least...and almost always made some noise in the playoffs....

Andy Reid had the most success but Pederson won a super bowl. Both are good choices.

Yeah for me Andy is the better coach, but my favorite is the guy who won the bowl.

Would Buddy and Vermeil really be considered modern era?

I've read a couple of different timeframes for 'modern era', one is that it begins in 1960  with the formation of the AFL. The other is 1970 with the NFL-AFL merger, but I suppose in that sense you could go to 1966 with the first NFL-AFL Championship game.

Regardless though, I'd place both of them firmly in the NFL's 'modern era'. If for no other reason than I'm not ancient and I remember both of their NFL careers.

I mean it has to be Doug right? He got us the ring. Against the evil empire no less. With Nick Foles. As great as Andy was he couldn't get us over the hump. With more dominant players. With a all time legend DC. Actually can I vote for Jim Johnson?

I picked Andy Reid because his first year as HC was my first year as a fan of the team which means he and those early 2000s teams will always be special to me. He took the eagles to a super bowl and had lots of success in the NFC east but he just couldn’t get over the hump. I can’t be alone in being happy he finally won the super bowl with KC, it’s the one SB outside of the eagles one in 2018 where I had a genuine reason to want a team to win.

I’ve seen modern era and super bowl era be used interchangeably which would be 1966 till now.

Easy one for me. I started supporting the Eagles right at the end of the Reid era so y is Dougy P for me hands down. He gave us that great night in February and gave us play off football 3 years in a row. That said looking back at the Reid years I can see why he is so many fans favourite HC.

as I said in my post...at one point this season, Chiefs were 3-4...they have won 7 in a row and are at the top of their division...

I don’t know how he does it but I’m glad we got many years of it while he was in Philly. Also, his ability to win after the bye should be studied as it’s amazing how he gets his teams to play like they weren’t on a bye.

Reid is just a good football coach..plain and simple..does he have his flaws? sure...but he never threw his players under the bus, the whole "I need to do a better job" routine was a deflection from players making mistakes on to himself...and he knows QBs, for the most part, the exception being Kevin Kolb....but he knew Donovan was the best of that class, he got Jeff Garcia to play well...he had AJ Feeley playing good, not great..enough that they got a 2nd rounder for him...
he resurrected Michael Vick's career..he lobbied HARD to draft Russell Wilson..and the league laughed at him when he moved up to draft Mahomes...

makes you wonder what Hurts would look like if Andy was coaching him...

anybody watch the Bill B. documentary? talk about a hardcore guy....one of the things he would do is approach players in the chow line randomly and give them a pop quiz...ask them what they do in certain game situations on the field...and the player was expected to know, if not, there would be repercussions...THAT is hardcore....

That's real life.  Our biggest tests in life come when we don't expect them.

There’s a new nfl films podcast where they play full conversations that the late Steve sabol had with many legendary figures in the NFL and Andy Reid is one of the first and it’s a fascinating listen. He talks in detail about some of the stuff you’ve mentioned. It made me like him even more than I did before which was a lot.

If you go back to right before the SB era, there were a string of horrible head coaches - joe kuharich, jerry wms., eddie khayat, mike mccormack - that preceded vermeil.  Most of the people on these boards don't know anything about those coaches, and if they did, wouldn't have such good memories of them.

I know the names, of course. But in terms of the first coach that I actually remember, it's Dick.
