Great thread on the verge of China's potential real estate collapse

US and UK agree to provide Australia with nuclear submarines in an effort to counter Chinese aggression.

Very good move by the Biden administration here. At some point there’s going to be hostilities. We need to be in the best position possible when it happens.

Why?

Most people don't care until there's pain.

I mean, I won't say it's really illuminating insight. I haven't done a deep dive on Evergrande because only a psycho would invest in a potential Chinese bankruptcy. The bonds currently trade below 30c on the dollar, which would usually be something I'd rip into. But...it's China. Distressed investing is based on the sanctity of contracts, creditor rights, etc. -- none of those things exist in China (hell, they barely exist in Europe).

From a larger sense, the Chinese real estate sector is a massive time bomb. Anyone who has looked, or gone over there, can see the massive oversupply, entire cities that are built and empty. The problem with the short investment is simple -- the Chinese can lie about it longer than you can stay in the trade. In a real economy, regulators or financial guidelines would require writedowns, marking assets to market and capital raises. But in China? They just keep the shell game going, lie and say the balance sheet is solid, and move on. The banks have been doing this for decades. They "sell" their bad loans to each other, or bundle them together. They claim to get 100c, but it's in worthless currency (usually illiquid equity). Look for the developers to do the same thing. Create a "bad bank" that they all sell bad assets into for 100c in BS paper.

PARIS (AP) — France said late Friday it was immediately recalling its ambassadors to the U.S. and Australia after Australia scrapped a big French conventional submarine purchase in favor of nuclear subs built with U.S. technology.

Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said in a written statement that the French decision, on request from President Emmanuel Macron, "is justified by the exceptional seriousness of the announcements” made by Australia and the United States.

He said Wednesday’s announcement of Australia’s submarine deal with the U.S. is "unacceptable behavior between allies and partners.”

Earlier Friday, a top French diplomat spoke of a "crisis” in relations with the U.S.

I honestly can't tell if you're criticizing Biden or lauding him.

This I find funny

Le Drain also compared President Biden to former President Trump.

"This brutal, unilateral and unpredictable decision reminds me a lot of what Mr. Trump used to do," Le Drian said. "I am angry and bitter. This isn't done between allies."

German engine technology found in Chinese warships

Engines developed in Germany can evade export control bans due to their status as a so-called dual-use technology, a German media investigation has revealed.

Uhh, she didn't ask him to release whoever this is (I'm not up on El Salvadoran politics).

This Nayib Bukele fellow is an idiot. Even the Spanish tweets in reply to him are saying those tweets don't say what he's claiming they do.

Jesus Christ does anybody scrutinize anything before it's shared?
