He took on everyone in the middle. I think it was partially that and partially that he was really banged up at the start of the season. Didn't start really playing like himself towards the end. Hopefully a clean bill of health, DTs that will take the focus away and allow him to rest more will help.

May 5, 20205 yr Preaching to the choir brother. D used to be our forte. I wonder how long Schwartz can keep up the magic trick. We got some younger LBs..but they are all projects. I wish Chinn would have fallen to us.

May 5, 20205 yr For LBs, I feel like the strategy is to take the castoffs from teams that value them high. Perriman and Reddick...I could foresee at least one of them on the team this year.

I actually think Wallace will be a really good player for us, but lots of question marks. I think Schwartz can make it work for now, but wouldn't surprise me if he exits for a team that invests a bit more in their D.

May 5, 20205 yr I'd love to believe that he's above replacement value, but I guess I want more evidence on the field.

I mean who's CB #2 when the season starts? Who's lined up at safety alongside McLeod? Who's in at LB?

Who's in at LB? Yeah absolutely and DE to an extent. Our best case is that Sidney Jones wins the job, but that’s more unlikely now! Alternatively if Wallace could win the safety job I’d be okay with Mills at CB2.

There seem to be enough pieces remaining at DE and the other DB spots to field very competitive line and defensive backfield. Points of... non-hope: Cox is great but appears to be on the decline. Malik Jackson's first productive play as an Eagle hasn't happened yet. Graham almost certainly is declining too. Barnett is still hit-and-miss. No one behind them scares anyone. The linebacking depth chart reminds me of all the years after Trotter went to the skins. Not pretty. Hopefully some guys step up, but meh. The loss of Jenkins is a big, big deal. Dude played literally all the defensive snaps for two straight years. Not saying it wasn't the right call to not invest this year in an aging player, but he's as close to irreplaceable as anyone. Total question mark how the secondary will come together with a shortened off-season and without that continuity. Agreed on all points, except for Jenkins. His heart was still in it, but his performance was often suspect last year. He's lost a step.

He did show glimpses towards the end of last season, but he noticeably didn’t play at all in the playoff game. Maybe I’m being overly pessimistic. If he could turn it around, this D would be potentially top 5.
May 8, 20205 yr At the expense of being overly optimistic I think the defense is better this year. Better on the D line with a healthy Jackson and Hargraves. Faster at LB. I'm hoping the new guys can tackle. Def better at the DB even though the loss of Jenkins might be big. My sleeper on the D is Avery as a rusher on passing downs. The key is for these folks to stay healthy which is our bugaboo every year.

I’d cap his ceiling at Patrick Robinson - could flash and provide a spark, still has great athleticism, blah blah. But he was drafted to have a ceiling of Darius Slay... instead the Eagles had to get and pay Darius Slay.

May 8, 20205 yr I'm giving Sidney Jones this season to prove it. Achilles tears are nasty and take a long time to recover from. Mentally you gotta be confident that it won't tear again, but also physically your body has to adjust to the loss of calf muscle. I know that NFL doctors are way better than what is available to a normal person, but my right calf is slightly smaller then my left and this is 10 years after my surgery. So if he tore it in 2017, takes a year to get comfortable with it. His body is still adjusting and compensating so he has hamstring issues in 2018 and 2019. Hopefully, his body has re-balanced itself enough and his mental game is still intact in 2020 to put it all together.
