Loved the man. Used to love watching the Raiders play one of my fave teams at the time (other than the Eagles), Miami, in high scoring, exciting games. Great coach, great announcer, great person. If you want to know what kind of human being John was, read the story of what he did when the Patriots Darryl Stingley was paralyzed for life during a game against the Raiders.

Madden and Summerall called the best Monday night games and also the Eagles vs Dallas games of the early 90s....

Madden replaced Tom Brookshier as Summerall's sidekick on CBS.  I believe he moved to MNF where he paired up with Al Michael's and later on SNF on NBC when that game because the featured game of the week.

I remember a game he announced when Gang Green was coming into their own.  He was amazed by the pure strength of Reggie, when 92 did that swim move arm lift throw of the massive man, Larry Allen.

Don't feel too bad. Flores took the Raiders back to the Super Bowl 2 more times and won one of them against the Washingteam.  He wasn't exactly Barry Switzer or Brian Billick.

Hmmmm interesting, it was so long ago, cant remember clearly.. I do recall a few Eagles games which Madden and Summerall called, was great commentary..

This drives me crazy about people. No one gives a rats ass till you die then they act like they loved you more then anyone in the world once you are gone. Even people that you never talked to all of a sudden are heart broken over it. 

I learned an interesting fact, John's son bought Muhammad Ali's camp a mile from where I live.

Madden was highly regarded and well liked in the industry and in the public well before his death.

John Madden was given a rare gift of being able to hear tributes about him that would not have been said until after he died because they said it as part of the documentary.   So glad that happened.

but kidding aside, that man could watch a play in real time and tell you what each of the 22 players on the field were doing during the play...why it worked, why it didn't work..just amazing..and he had some of the BEST one liners ever....

remember watching a Packers playoff game during the 1996 season..when some fools thought it would be fun to watch a game at Lambeau in January with shorts and no shirts...with a wind chill of -10...remember that?  They panned to some of those guys during the game...Summerall asks: "What do you make of that John?"

John responds: "Those aren't exactly the sharpest knives in the drawer..."

 

John Madden, to me, will always be the king of NFL color commentators.
