2022 season home and away opponents

The Eagles 2022 opponents are as follows:

Eagles  Home: Cowboys, Giants, Washington, Vikings, Packers, Saints, Titans, Jaguars, Steelers
Away: Cowboys, Giants, Washington, Bears, Lions, Cardinals, Colts, Texans

Maybe the most interesting game is the Wentz Bowl against the Colts.  Too bad that one is an away game.

You're assuming Wentz is still starting for the Colts.

I always look forward to when we play the Steelers. Always seems to be a game I end up watching with others where everyone respects both teams.

I think there’s a 50/50 chance the Colts move on from Wentz after one season

Yeah, I’m actually not making that assumption — that’s kind of why I said "maybe”.  But it’s not clear how the Colts would be able to move on to someone better … it’s not like they have a first round draft pick to use on a prospect or in a trade.  Tehee.

Minshew mania… I think Wentz would suffer a complete mental break if the Colts brought in the Eagles backup QB to replace him.

Then you’re looking at close to a 10-11 win team.

Colts would need to give me multiple 1st round picks to take Wentz off their hands. And he’d be the backup.

Depending on what happens in the offseason that could actually be a rough season

Not thrilled with having to face Henry or Rodgers

I'm curious how Lawrence will be in his 2nd year with a new HC

Are Steelers going to look for a QB or do they have a backup they're going to try out?

I thought Skins defense was going to be a problem this season but it nope

Not to mention, Nick Foles will probably be available in free agency. 😒

Honestly I was semi hoping Minshew had an outstanding game against Dallas in hopes the Eagles could flip him and sign Foles. Oh well.

It will be interesting to see where the put the Wentz bowl, as I can see that be the Monday night opener on ESPN and ABC.   That said, however, it is notable the Eagles actually can play ANY Monday night at home this season as the Phillies have a scheduling quirk where they do not play ANY Monday games in September.

A Wentz Bowl would definitely be interesting for Eagles fans because it faces off the two QBs the team had to select between (sorta -- Wentz's butthurtness kinda made that choice for them), but it is not clear to me other teams' fans will care at all.  Even Colts fans would probably be kind of blase about that aspect -- they don't really care if Wentz is better than Hurts ... they just want him to be good.  Still, I think it would make pretty good prime-time game fodder.

The irony about the game is there’s a potential chance that neither quarterback will be the starters for their current teams. I personally think it more likely than not, but I know both fan bases right now have some people who want that guy out of their respective teams. There’s also been rumored FO in both organizations that aren’t completely sold on either quarterback.

The Colts would have to be extraordinarily motivated to move on from Wentz -- there would be a big dead cap hit and they don't have a first round draft pick to land someone new, whether a prospect or via trade.  The Eagles obviously have the draft capital to do something if they want ... but the choices are pretty meh and not clearly better than just seeing what happens with Hurts 2.0.

There is a chance (very slim one) the Colts could move Wentz, but there’s no chance they could get a first for him. I mean if the players feel that they can’t win with the guy as their leader there might not be a choice. There’s already reports out of Indy that Wentz could be one and done. Reich didn’t even commit to him when he had two opportunities on separate days. Wentz isn’t elite, but he’s certainly a better option than many other quarterbacks in the NFL right now.

I am pretty skeptical about a lot of that stuff.  Those kind of reports sell newspapers and garner eyeballs, so they are going to emerge after not making the playoffs regardless.  And I doubt the Colts players feel like they *can't* win with him as their leader - they had a 9-3 stretch that included 4 wins over playoff teams (SF, Buf, NE and Ari), and 5 of their losses were against playoff teams.  And Reich ... may just be an "every year is an open competition" guy that has no interest in "committing" to a player just because a noodnik from the press asks him to.

But set all that skepticism aside, and accept that Reich and the front office are eager to replace Wentz and Colts players let management know they do not have faith in Wentz as a leader ... who are they going to replace Wentz with?  Their backup QBs are Sam Ehlinger and James Morgan, the free agent crop is devoid of any difference makers (Cam Newton?  Andy Dalton?  Tyrod Taylor?), they have no first round draft pick in a draft not too many people think includes a franchise QB, and trading for a quality QB will almost certainly require a 2022 first round draft pick, among other things.

That's what I meant by they would have to be extraordinarily motivated to move on ... nobody is going to give them anything for Wentz on his contract so they basically have to be willing to release him, swallow the guaranteed money, take the cap hit, and turn the keys of an otherwise very talented team over to ... ummm ... who?  Nobody they can have any genuine faith is an actual improvement over Wentz.

Overall they had an opportunity to endorse Wentz, both Reich and Ballard, but neither did. Perhaps they’re keeping their options open, but it really doesn’t take much to say a guy that is under contract with your team that you simply want him back right? I don’t think either guy cares even a little about selling papers. I do think they’re sending a not so subtle message that failure isn’t going to be tolerated.

That Pittsburgh game will be interesting. If they get a good QB to replace Ben that would be bad new for us but if they don't and end up with some jpurneyman then that would be good for the Eagles.

I could see them going all in on Pickett. It would be quite the Pittsburgh thing to do.

This is generally not a good offseason to be in the market for a QB, but Pittsburgh could be a good landing spot for Russell Wilson.

I don’t disagree with any of that, or really any of what you have said.  But if both Reich and Ballard came out publicly and said "we are actively seeking an improvement at QB for 2022” … I still think Wentz would end up their starter next year.  They’re boxed into a corner without a way to get a better option for 2022.

In the end I’m glad it’s their problem and not the Eagles problem. I just hope the Eagles don’t go out there and box themselves back into a corner by chasing after someone else’s discarded quarterback.
