LBs are typically the heart and soul of a defense, no LBs/no defense as far as I'm concerned......and I'm not speaking of drag down tacklers, give me some hitters!! This could be the year considering how they hoarded CB’s, maybe they’ll try to get one opposite Slay, that way instead of drafting one in the 1st round which could possibly mean, Dean or Lloyd getting drafted. The defense needs a leader on the field and typically it’s either a LB or a Safety. Dawkins couldn’t be replaced, but Malcom Jenkins did a nice job getting the defense into position. QB’s, LB’s and Safety’s are the 3 positions that usually know everyone on the field and where they should be on any given play.

I think they need to recognise their cap situation and go after a CB early. They need a good CB opposite Slay who can start pretty much straight away. That'll mean they don't necessarily have to bring back Nelson (who I thought was OK) or a veteran and use cap on that position.

Fair enough. That article cites to an article by Jeff McLane of the Inquirer, which I cannot access. Since I live on the West Coast, I do not read the Inquirer, but I believe McLane is probably about as good a source as one could hope. I assume McLane's source is anonymous, which I am always skeptical about, but let's assume the story is true. I would consider that to be great news. The article says there was a dispute between the scouting department, who wanted Jefferson, and the coaching staff (which I assume to largely mean Pederson), who wanted Raegor, and that Roseman decided to align with his Super Bowl winning coaching staff. That means the Eagles scouting department that Roseman put together got that evaluation correct, which is great news! One reason Roseman may have fired Pederson is Pederson insisting on making the draft picks he and his coaches prioritized over the players the scouting department prioritized, and that was just not going to fly any more after Pederson evaluated Raegor over Jefferson -- it is easy to imagine Pederson pushing his Super Bowl winning pedigree around and Roseman giving him what he wanted in the face of that pedigree. Roseman would have rightly been furious at how Pederson's choice turned out, and when Pederson kept pushing his own agenda in the post-2020 offseason, Roseman finally got fed up and cut bait. The Sirianni hire may have been predicated on Sirianni relying on the evaluations of the scouting department rather than him and his coaches. Given that the scouting department appears to have been effective based on the reports, that too would be great news.

I probably have a hard time thinking they'd give Pederson the freedom to pick the players selected in the draft but not the same freedom to choose his staff.
January 23, 20223 yr An anonymous source saying Howie got it right. Gee I wonder who that anonymous source is? It's just the weasel doing weasily things.

Given that the scouting department appears to have been effective based on the reports, that too would be great news. This is ridiculous. It's the GM's job to make the picks. And if the GM is left to choose between two sides... the scouts and the coaches, it means that the entire organization is fractured and not working within a single framework for what they are trying to build. Not surprising, since Howie flip flops from year to year on whether he wants high ceiling athletic players with little pedigree, or if he wants accomplished players from big schools with strong pedigrees, but perhaps a lower ceiling. The fish stinks from the head down. This team continues to lack a single vision of what they are trying to build, and as such, you can see the disjointed nature from year to year in what they bring in via the draft.
