Choosing Wentz over Foles looks worse by the year

One of the great myths in Eagles history is that Nick Foles ever got a fair shot.  He didn't.  He never even got the chance to play more than one season with the same team until week 16 in Chicago this season (a game he played well in and won).  In fact, his three stints in St. Louis, Jacksonville, and Chicago all had three things in common:

1.  Turn-style offensive lines

2.  Head coaches that have since been fired (the first two of which have never resurfaced)

3.  Lack of familiarity/timing with the personnel around him due to a lack of time in the system

Meanwhile, he's never done anything here (sans the first eight games of 2014, in which he still went 6-2) except engineer elite offenses.  The credit was always given to those around him (the coaches, the offensive line, the skill guys) - yet the franchise has never managed to construct anything close to an elite offense (2017 Wentz notwithstanding) in his absence.

I like Hurts, but it's certainly possible (following an off-season of speculation the year prior) the organization will decide to move on - in which case it will have cycled through its second post-Foles QB, all the while he could have still been here, playing in this game today.

People will caution that Hurts is in only his second pro season, and first under Nick Sirianni.  They'll note how limited the Eagles are at wide receiver beyond DeVonta Smith.

But things looked a lot better in Foles' second season (in fairness, he was a bit older than Hurts at that point) under first year coach Chip Kelly.  I don't remember Aikman and Bradshaw calling him out repeatedly for missed throws and indecision.  Matter of fact, I'm pretty sure he left the field with the lead - in the bitter cold, against the 11 win Saints.  And if you squint, you can probably see how the composition of that team - having lost Jeremy Maclin in camp - was awfully similar to the one we had this year.  You had three proven weapons on offense, a killer running game, and a couple really good tackles.  You also had a rookie play-caller/head coach.

After a day like this, it will be easy to second guess Howie on a guy like Reagor (and many of us first guessed it), especially with a potential gold jacket slipping to Minnesota with the very next pick.  But don't overlook the bigger picture.  Don't lose sight of the blunder that truly wrecked a potential dynasty.  That's still the real blood on his hands.

I wish people would give this a rest.

Foles isn't a starter in the NFL. He's not a starter because he's just not that good. He had 2 incredible stretches in Philly but he's struggled everywhere else and he's had his struggles in Philly.

Sure giving Wentz that contract was a mistake but without it would they have gotten a first round pick? Possibly not. But going for the young QB who most thought had the brightest future and was potentially going to be an elite QB was not the wrong decision at the time.

The Eagles weren't to know that either injuries or mentality issues were going to lead to a Wentz regression like it did. They went with the better QB based on talent.

Hey, I've always have been a huge Nick Foles fan......and you're right in that he always played for lousy teams, lousy coaches and with terrible offensive lines and few support players.  And despite what guys say on this board, he was always a starting caliber QB who never got the time, whether it was from injury or an idiot coach yanking him in and out, to establish himself for more than half a season.

However, there are a few things that have cost him dearly in his career.   One being that when he gets established as a starter, he ALWAYS gets hurt...usually an injury that keeps him out for a long stretch........and the idiot coaches he's played for, change QBs and directions.

First, that disaster Chip Kelly traded him to St Louis after Foles was 14-4 as a starter and 40 TDs and 12 INTS......but got a broken collarbone halfway thru the 2014 season and got traded to St Louis and that QB killer jeff fisher.

Then, after the super bowl, he allowed his agent to negotiate and sign with jacksonville and that clown doug marrone....

Then after Jacksonville, being traded to Chicago and another disaster Matt Nagy.....with Nagy getting pressure to play Trubisky.

And in each of those situations, he was injured after winning the starting position.

His career is now relegated to being a backup or an emergency QB......But he was absolutely a starting caliber QB who played for some of the the worst coaches & teams......Kelly, Fisher, Marrone, Nagy......holy sh--......Foles is a perfect example of how the NFL can f---- up a QBs career with bad coaches, bad situations and bad management.

False.  He played games over 3 seasons for the Eagles from 2012-2014.

He took over starting in 2012 as a rookie when Vick got hurt.  Vick was healthy again and despite a losing season and it would have been better to let Foles play, they started Vick.  But Foles played pretty well that year and a bunch of the skill players were hurt too.

2013 we all know what happened when he took over when Vick got hurt.  Then he was the starter in 2014 until he got hurt.  He got his shot, although Chip stupidly traded him for Bradford.

Ultimately, with the way things played out he was part of the comeback/underdog story that helped them win a Super Bowl.

Foles demonstrated an uncanny ability to play at a high level whenever he came off the bench during his time with the Eagles, including the 2017 Super Bowl run. Foles will always be an Eagles legend for the Super Bowl win.

However, his play when starting out as the presumptive starter left much to be desired. If you average it all out, he's a streaky player that you hope to gamble on playing at a high level when it matters the most.
