I'm sure part of the reason Howie is OK with being cap strapped next offseason is because our 2017 draft was a near complete waste.  Barnett is already on the books for 2021 (at a poor value, but let's stay focused).  The only other players that they MIGHT have ANY interest in bringing back are not going to be expensive.  Gerry won't get much at all.  Mills has Wallace on his heels.  Maddox/Jones will be affordable, even if one surprises and isn't a liability for a change this year.

So truly 0 concern about losing any of our own players.  So then the only real issue is that we won't have enough cap space to use FA as our annual crutch to cover up draft mistakes.

If Dillard starts, Sanders progresses, and 2020 represents a rebound class, then they'll have enough home-grown boost that they won't need FA.  Cam Robinson as an interior OL project is the only moderately expensive FA I'd have my eye on anyway.

I mean I guess but it seems like we have been saying this since 2012 with the dream team and all those contracts. Until the eagles actually have to make a major cut or not get who they want because of the cap I'm not going to worry about it.

Also never understood why we are worried about a cap that is a year and a half away alot can happen between now and then.

Best line I heard all day!!!

Is the Goodwin contract restructure finalized?

I've seen reports and rumors, but none on mainstream sites.

If there’s one thing Howie is a league leader in, it’s cap manipulation...

I don’t have any concerns with Howie being able to sort that $50m deficit, but what I am concerned about is, the lack of flexibility it gives the Eagles in FA, both in the remainder of this year, and next year...

I am sure that figure is largely responsible for us passing on a number of impact players this offseason already...

lol why do people worry about this every year. Howie is cap king.

I feel like we talk about this every year and then Howie figures it out.

If we are significantly under the cap, couldn’t we restructure some contracts to make more this year and less next?

Howie got it. Jackson, Alshon, Goodwin, and others probably gone next year. Restructure for Cox probably happens soon for him to end his career as an Eagle. Howie figures this stuff out every year. He is the best at it. Drafts now thats another story. Cap management... beast.

But it keeps getting significantly worse, he REALLY has some work to do next off season, and I do not see a way to do it.

If you look at the spreadsheet I posted and my picture of Malik Jackson's contract, there is no savings cutting him next year.

I see it now. My bad. Not really saving much. Just an even split, but that’s better than Jeffery. Bye Barnett.

Barnett probably gets a new deal that will significantly lower his cap hit for next year. I would imagine that Graham and Jackson both get new deals as well. They are both in a position where they will not get any money at all if they get cut, since their signing bonuses have already been paid to them. And their value on the open market isn't going to be great. So I can see the team getting them back on cheap deals that will reduce their cap hits for next year.

Interesting the Ertz turned down a new deal. I don’t know if it would have changed his 2021 cap number by much, but it doesn’t seem like he’s ready to play ball tough choices need to be made. I doubt the can keep him and Goedert.

Seems like they have an out on Malik Jackson, unless this article is completely wrong.

It seems they actually did exercise his option this offseason, which makes absolutely zero sense to me.

OTC has it way different.

It looks like that option was exercised.  As for the "there is some dead money, but not alot", thats bunk.  Looks like 9 million.  Unless OTC is way off.

I don’t know enough about this cap crap, but how does it work if a player is traded rather than cut in regards to dead money? I’ve been saying all offseason they should be looking to move Ertz sooner than later... if he’s traded rather than cut, does that get rid of any of that dead money?

With your example, I would point out that they did flounder and did have to make cuts\trades to shed cap space.  We were forced to trade Asante Samuel for a measley 7th round pick.

As for your second point, its because there is very little wiggle room.  Look at the top 19 players on our roster:

There are VERY few levers to pull.  Like I said earlier, the biggest relief could be Barnett being cut, which is something you really don't want to root for.  Goodwin's contract was supposedly restructured, so what you see above doesnt apply.  Maybe extend Ertz and convert salary to bonus money, which a symptom of the constant cycle of restructuring contracts, you are forced to down the road when normally you wouldn't need to and thus giving you roster flexability.   Maybe Howie will get the bright idea to restructure Jeffery again

So I disagree, given where they are at contract wise, there isn't a lot that can happen.

This is what cap hell truely looks like.  Being forced to restructure just to stay afloat and removing any semblance of roster flexiblity.

Howie is God of Caps damnit.

Jeffery gone, Ertz extension, Barnett extension, Goddert extension, Djax getting a new contract that lowers his cap hit, Malik and Graham restructuring their contracts... moves I can see happening to fix the cap situation.
