May 17, 20205 yr "13 players account for $220-million in cap-space next year," Caplan explained. "They're going to have a cap issue."Read More: Adam Caplan Discusses Eagles being Linked to Jadeveon Clowney | https://973espn.com/adam-caplan-discusses-eagles-being-linked-to-jadeveon-clowney/?utm_source=tsmclip&utm_medium=referral I have never been one to worry much about the cap, but they have some serious issues to deal with in 2021.
May 17, 20205 yr The cap is driven by revenue. If the league takes a serious hit before resuming normal operations - like, having people attend games - they’re going to have to address the cap. Any of you CBA gurus know what that looks like? Is there a force majeure provision in the new deal?

Dont see an extension for both Zach and Dallas. Dallas knows he has the talent to start and so do the other teams. If Zach is resigned Dallas will not stay in Philly. He will move on to a new team that he can become a starter. He will get the same money from other teams so if your Dallas are you getting paid to play a limited role or paid to play the starter? No brainier there. guess who needs a starting TE? the team he was named after. If we dont move on from Ertz after this year, Dallas will be in Dallas and will go on to be a massive mistake.

Plus, they can franchise him if he doesn't sign an extension. Dallas is going to get decent money but not a huge deal, probably similar to what Tyler Higbee got. The team is in a position to spend at TE because, after this season, the wr payroll will go way down with Jeffery, DJax and Goodwin all likely gone. They really need Reagor to be good, since Ward gives them a safety blanket as a reliable second WR in their two TE offense. If that happens, the offense is basically set. As far as the salary cap next year, I think they can cut a lot of the spending on defense. Graham and Malik Jackson will probably get new deals that cut their cap hit next year, and will be reasonable based on the expectation that their snap counts will go down.
May 17, 20205 yr Zach might play like a slot WR but he lines up at TE which means when it is not a 12 set Dallas is off the field. They can tag him but would be costly. With Etrz declining the offer given making him the highest paid TE in the league currently means he is a luxury we cant afford. hes going to wait to see what Kittle gets and will want more. I could see Etrz gone and moving in the direction of Dallas which is the best for the team long term. Have to know when to move on.

If you look at the spreadsheet I posted and my picture of Malik Jackson's contract, there is no savings cutting him next year. So... not bad. But lets look at the numbers from a big picture standpoint. Carryover.... my guess is we carryover around $15-17 mil after the draft picks are signed and any additional moves. So lets start at with $50 mil over .... minus the $15 carryover ... say $35 mil over... 1. Cut the 3 vet WRs ... Goodwin, Alshon and DeSean ...$20 mil savings.... down to $15 mil over 2. Barnett gets a new contract .... cap hit goes down from $10 mil to say $3 mil .... Brings cap down to $8 mil over To me this is pretty much where we are with really 3 players that can have a legit impact in bringing down the cap...... Wentz, Cox an Ertz. Ertz isn't going to get cut... either they redo his deal or he gets traded. Cox... they aren't getting rid of him so it could be a restructure but he is going to be 30, so I think they may be a little hesitant there. Wentz to me is the easiest move. To be honest, when I first saw his contract details, I thought 2021 was an obvious restructure. They have $25.4 mil to play with there, and in reality, they could even give him additional $$ from the 2022 salary (QB contracts are going to go up huge these next couple of years, they throw him a quick $40 mil or so and use that as a signing bonus prorated over 5 years..... $8 mil per year, get a huge cap relief in 2021 and 2022. Their big contracts are set to expire with the dead money gone going into 2023, they could absorb the extra cap hit without an issue) 3. So say Wentz redo gets them down another $16 mil ..... that puts them $8 mil under .... $8 mil under but we also need to sign the 2021 draft class... say another $5 mil on the cap hit. Plus if the cap hit goes down at all due to COVID ... plus we will need to sign a few few agents o fill out roster spots etc.... I think they need to make another move.... it's where Ertz and Cox could be next. Hargrave may be a possibility as well? That is a $12.5 mil salary to use ... if they like him they could easily push that back to clear up some space. The issue is they won't be major players in Free agency for this year or next year. They are set up to get back to that in 2022, but hopefully a lot of the draft picks pan out so the needs will be few. Even if they are more than a few, the idea is we will have a better feel after 2 years of seeing it play out. They shouldn't have to waste money on a back up QB... main reason IMO they used a draft pick on one this year... the amount of money it will save. We shall see... but I'm not worried about them getting under the cap for 2021.. just that they won't play the FA market next year. But the Wentz restructure is the major move everyone seems to forget is coming. It's going to be the biggest single piece to save cap room next year.

May 18, 20205 yr Last year at this time, they projected the eagles would be $40 million over the cap and would need to make some painful moves. Again, the media was wrong. These contracts and the salary cap aren't just simple math. One thing that Roseman is very good at is cap management. .And I'm willing to bet that Roseman already has a game plan for dealing with that next year. So while some of the salary cap websites are fun to look at, the simple fact is that the complications and implications of each and every contract come into play and the vague rules and idiosyncrasies of the salary cap are known to but a few outside of the guys in the NFL who have to manage it. So relax about the "projected" salary cap issue

It was a move to make short term cap space that we are paying for today.
May 18, 20205 yr So if the cap does, as reported, take a big drop in the next couple of years how is that going to work for the league? I mean I just don't see that it would surely?

But if he is, who would you replace? Ward seems like the obvious candidate, and maybe someone will beat him out. But a guy who catches 70 percent of his targets isn't someone you want to stick on the bench just because he wasn't a top draft pick.

May 18, 20205 yr If anyone is at all worried about the cap, give this a listen https://overthecap.com/otc-podcast-qb-contracts-plus-how-do-the-eagles-handle-the-2021-cap/ Basic summary, rollover, cut Jeffery/Jackson, extend Cox two years, restructure Wentz puts them somewhere around $16M under per OTC's 2021 cap estimate. Now, if it decreases due to loss revenue, that's a different story, although the same guy from OTC says he doesn't see how a major cap decrease is doable for the league and they would likely come to some agreement to soften the blow if that were to happen. To put it in to perspective Quote So, I don’t think that their cap situation is necessarily as dire as a lot of people make it out to be. Let’s put it this way: the Eagles reading at 50 [million] are in a lot better of a situation than the Saints reading at 34 [million] over or the Falcons at three [million] over just the way their roster is constructed and the way things kind of align when you’re talking about free agents, timing on extensions, and everything else.
May 18, 20205 yr We'll be fine with the cap. But people also need to realize that Howie and Rosenberg are always thinking 2-3 years ahead. That's why, even when they have 20+ million in cap room right now, they still can't afford Ngakoue or Clowney, or couldn't give Jenkins a better contract, and that's why Peters might only come back if it's at a cheap deal.
May 18, 20205 yr 1 hour ago, LeanMeanGM said: No it doesn't My bad. Usually OTC will figure that into the next year.
