By Brandon Lee Gowton@BrandonGowton May 6, 2020, 2:48am All sharing options Photo by Mitchell Leff/Getty Images The Philadelphia Eagles are one of multiple NFL teams expressing interest in signing free agent defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, according to FOX 26 sports director Mark Berman. (Same guy who first reported Timmy Jernigan to the Houston Texans.) Berman notes that the Seattle Seahawks, the Cleveland Browns, the Baltimore Ravens, and the Tennessee Titans are also in the market for the No. 1 overall pick from the 2014 NFL Draft. Clowney to the Eagles is an idea we previously discussed in last week’s "Free agents the Eagles can sign now that it won’t impact their compensatory pick formula” post on BGN. Can you imagine? First, the Eagles use pick No. 53 on a backup quarterback instead of another offensive weapon for Carson Wentz. Then they go out and sign the dude that concussed him back in January? On the flip side, signing Clowney would prevent him from hitting Wentz with another cheap shot during a game. Seriously, though, I don’t see the Eagles signing Clowney. Even putting the Wentz angle aside, his price tag is probably more than what the Eagles want to pay. And Clowney might not exactly be rushing to play in Philly, either. He did refer to Eagles fans as "the worst fans in the world.” The Eagles ideally could afford to add another pass rusher, though. Derek Barnett and Brandon Graham are locked in as the 2020 starters but there isn’t much proven depth behind them. Josh Sweat is the current favorite to be the first pass rusher off the bench. Beyond him, it’s anyone’s guess. Despite this new report, I still don’t think the Eagles will be the team to sign Clowney. Howie Roseman sure didn’t jump at the chance to acquire him last year when all the trade compensation took was a 2020 third-round pick and two backup linebackers. NFL insider Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports previously suggested the Eagles don’t view Clowney as a fit. From last year: "I don’t think he’s viewed by the power brokers in Philly as someone fitting their cap/culture situations. NFL is a never say never league, but that’s not looking like a fit.” [...] "One more note on Eagles pass rush: Twice in the last month, I’ve asked if there is any interest in Jadeveon Clowney. And twice the response has been flat. His culture fit doesn’t seem right and his extension figures - likely around 5 years and $110 million - are a big burden.” At first glance, the Eagles do have money to spend on Clowney with $23,547,404 in cap space to work with. That’s actually good for seventh most in the league. But the Eagles won’t be looking to spend that entire amount given that they’re currently projected to be $50.7 million OVER the cap in 2021. The Eagles need to roll over some of their current cap space to help out with next year. Graphic via Over The Cap: And thus I can’t see the Eagles bringing in Clowney on some kind of big money contract. They’re more likely to address their need for more edge help with a bargain bin signing. On that note, NBC Sports Philadelphia recently suggested that Vinny Curry could be coming back for another season: Derrick Gunn ✔@RealDGunnNBCS Vinny Curry could be next to rejoin the birds.... 1,888 7:03 PM - Apr 29, 2020 Twitter Ads info and privacy 246 people are talking about this The fact that the Eagles were one of multiple teams listed in Berman’s report indicates the source was likely Clowney’s agent trying to drum up a market for his client. It’s entirely possible the Eagles have expressed interest in Clowney in the form of checking in on his price tag. If the cost is more reasonable than expected, Roseman might strike. But I wouldn’t hold your breath on that front. Clowney will likely be playing for another team in 2020.
Procus Posted May 6, 2020 Author Posted May 6, 2020 https://www.profootballrumors.com/2020/05/eagles-ravens-interested-in-jadeveon-clowney Quote Eagles, Ravens Interested In Jadeveon Clowney? May 6th, 2020 at 8:56am CST by Rory Parks A number of teams have been connected in some way or another to free agent edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney over the course of the past several months. The Eagles and Ravens are two such teams, but while there was plenty of speculation linking Clowney to those clubs, there were no concrete reports on that front. However, Mark Berman of Fox 26 KRIV may have changed that last night. Per Berman’s sources, Philadelphia and Baltimore are among the teams expressing interest in Clowney’s services (Twitter link). Of course, the degree of their interest is unclear, and it’s possible that those clubs are simply keeping tabs on Clowney in case he falls into a certain price range or in case something should happen to one of their other pass rushers. Nonetheless, the "addition” of two Super Bowl hopefuls to the market is notable and will certainly be welcomed by Clowney himself. The Ravens’ edge rushing contingent is headed by the franchise-tagged Matt Judon, but we do not know where the two sides stand in their negotiations of a long-term pact, and Judon has been rumored as a trade candidate. Although Baltimore’s cap space as it presently stands would seem to preclude a Clowney signing without restructuring the contracts of other players, the team could theoretically trade Judon for quality draft capital and allocate his cap charge to Clowney. The Ravens did re-sign Pernell McPhee just yesterday, and while McPhee can certainly be useful as a rotational pass rusher, his presence will hardly stop GM Eric DeCosta from pursuing Clowney if he believes there’s a fit. Meanwhile, a pass rusher is arguably the Eagles’ biggest remaining need. Philadelphia has enough salary cap room to fit Clowney into the roster this year, but the club has a lot of work to do with respect to its 2021 cap, especially if the cap should decline as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. So any rollover money the Eagles can carry from 2020 into 2021 will be hugely beneficial. On the other hand, if GM Howie Roseman thinks Clowney can help get his team back to the promised land this year, then his 2021 cap situation will not stop him from pulling the trigger. Berman also notes that the Titans and Browns are very much in the mix for Clowney, though their interest has been well-documented. In addition, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2014 draft has not ruled out a return to the Seahawks. "I hope we can work something out if anything happens,” Clowney said. "I did like it up there. … I love all the guys I played with. … I love Seattle. … I love everyone on the coaching staff” (Twitter link via Berman). Consistent with what we heard last week, Clowney said he is willing to wait to sign until interested clubs can bring him in for a physical. "I know what’s going on in the world,” Clowney said. "It’s a slow process until teams can see me and see what I got and can give me physicals. I’m just waiting on the right opportunity” (Twitter link via Berman). Those comments were the first Clowney has made publicly since the end of the 2019 season, and he has been working out at a gym in Houston four days a week since undergoing core muscle surgery (Twitter link via Berman). He says he is fully recovered from his injury, but to get the payday he wants, he will likely need to wait until teams can make that determination for themselves. UK_EaglesFan89 Posted May 6, 2020 Posted May 6, 2020 I wouldn't worry, it's not going to happen. Too many other teams involved. It'll end up in a bidding war and Howie will have no part of that. 1
Miami Posted May 6, 2020 Posted May 6, 2020 Not at $20 million or whatever he wants. But if the price is right, Howie may do a smaller deal. We definitely need more pressure on the edge.
DeathByEagle Posted May 6, 2020 Posted May 6, 2020 Eagles are reported to be signing every top player. Its getting old now. 2

EaglesAddict Posted May 7, 2020 Posted May 7, 2020 I didn't want Clowney BEFORE the Wentz hit and Philly fans comment. Overrated, and has the stench of a guy that's gonna let up some after he gets his payday. Teams would be best served to keep him on one year deals. 2
EricAllenPick6 Posted May 7, 2020 Posted May 7, 2020 His agent is trying to drive up the cost. Spotrac says we have $22m in cap space, but some of that is going to be for rookies. I doubt it's even feasible.
birdman#12 Posted May 7, 2020 Posted May 7, 2020 The eagles cap space for 2021 is listed as of today. But the structures of those contracts gives Howie a load of flexibility in addition to the moves he can make. As far as Clowney is concerned, yes, they could agree with him on a 1year deal or even go 3 year deal. But they won't go 5 years. Clowney and his agent can talk all they want about being OK with waiting, but the longer he waits, the more likely he signs a 1 year deal for what he made last year, and he tries the free agent route again next year. This is a typical case of a player and agent overestimating his value. He's not a $20 million a year player. With that being said, with the eagles defensive line, Clowney could be a nightmare for offenses to deal with......With Cox demanding constant double teams, Malik Jackson and Hargrave getting great pocket push and Graham coming off the other end, Clowney could finally break that 10 sack ceiling.... 1

And that hasn't particularly been a success for him this year has it. I mean I guess he could back himself to have a big year and get a big contract but that's a real risk.
nipples Posted May 7, 2020 Posted May 7, 2020 One of the most overrated players in the league. Hard pass. 1

His work ethic was already in question before even being drafted and he’s done nothing but underwhelm as a #1 pick. If he gets a big payday, I have little doubt he’ll be another Albert Haynesworth. 2
Wormlegs Posted May 8, 2020 Posted May 8, 2020 No interest whatsoever. He isnt a guy that I would want to see on this team 2

DeathByEagle Posted May 9, 2020 Posted May 9, 2020 Just wish he would hurry up and sign with a team so these dumb reports of Eagles being interested can stop. 1
