Anyone owned one?  I have questions, thinking of going to one full time, as I work remotely.

Good friend of mine used to be a pipeliner and had a 35' fifth wheel pull behind to live in while he was on the road. I stayed in it once while he was home. He pulled it to a party and parked it in someone's front yard

That thing was ridiculous. Full sized bathroom, living room, kitchen, gas fireplace, king sized bed, couch and a recliner. He was telling me about the ones his buddies on the line had with toy haulers in the back to bring a motorcycle or UTV, and then the back would fold into a screened in porch area. There are some crazy RVs out there too, and they cost more than most houses.

I live in FL, but if I brought to the linc to tailgate, yes. I see them often there. You pay more for the space.

I have this....

2017_Starcraft_AR-ONE.jpg

It's pretty cool, stove, AC, Microwave, shower, toilet, refrigerator.  I took it to the games, it does the job.  Cheap.  Mine is a 2017, I got it for $7000.

All things equal, what’s the advantage or disadvantage versus getting an RV vs 5th wheel

which would you rather have

I've never had either, but it always seemed to me if you were going to go somewhere and want a car, a pull behind is better. I wouldn't want to have to flat tow a car everywhere

5th wheels have larger, better floor plans. I almost went this route but after adding up the costs,  including a capable truck , with the crazy truck prices now, it just didn't make sense.  Biggest drawback aside from the money was if you towed it someplace and wanted to use your vehicle, you had to go thru all the disconnecting,  and ground setup for the trailer.  Also maneuverability is harder with a larger 5th wheel.   The class A has plenty of space,  and we pull a jeep behind it that can be disconnected in 3 minutes.  Class A with tow behind vehicle is much easier to drive and get into parking areas than a 3/4 ton and large 5th wheel.  Maintenance is much higher on a Class A though..... There are a ton of pros and cons to both.  But to me with a 5th wheel you are basically buying two vehicles instead of 1.

A trailer is going to take more time to set up and level, whereas an RV you’ll be able to find a relatively level spot, park, and be set up in minutes. So if you plan to be fairly stationary probably not a big deal, but if you anticipate hopping for one location to the next frequently then setup/tear down  time is a consideration.

I’m not getting one, but for sake of helping others, I would assume the 5th wheel just exists, and the RV has an engine so there’s probably mandatory registration, car insurance, etc that make it have a never-ending monthly payment even once the thing is paid off?

There’s probably completely different classifications. 5th wheel probably has some flat rate, that’s a flat rate no matter what state you "live” in. Motor vehicles tho, in several states, have varying rates that often is a percentage of what the "vehicle” is worth.

no it varies just like it would for a car.

I'd really like this thread to continue, as I am in the market for a travel trailer as well.

Something under 25k.

Thoughts?

under $25k def gives you options. it really comes down to what you want and how you'll use it.
