Eagles nearly traded for Calvin Ridley before he was suspended for gambling

Do people realize that the Eagles ALWAYS a seem to be the team in the mix for some player or barely trading for some guy, or had submitted an offer yet they never seem to get that player? I wonder why?

LOL.  What are you talking about -- the Eagles might have made more trades over the past decade than any team in the league.  When you kick the can on a lot of potential trades, you are not going to pull the trigger on every one - the price is going to be too high sometimes.  There are certainly things to criticize Roseman about, but deal-making?  Nah, he is as good at putting trades together as any GM in the league.  This particular deal appears to have been a done deal, but the Falcons pulled out at the last minute because they learned about Ridley's potential suspension, knowing to do otherwise would be unethical.

Thank goodness this is one they missed on (if the "report” is true).

I wonder if Howie would have been as ethical?

Howie pretty much did both Wentz and Ertz solids in their respective trades. It’s not his fault how they might have turned out.

A deep WR draft coming up and Howie was trying to trade for a receiver who had to step away from the game to deal with mental health issues last season?  Don't get me wrong Ridley was a good receiver in 2020, but last year he was a 50 yards a game guy who's mental health was so bad he voluntarily missed most of the season. Given how hard players without a history of mental health issues can find playing for the Eagles, what was Howie's thought process here?

Could be that we have experience with this recently (Brooks, Johnson) and he felt that he could get him for a fair price and that they could help him out.

Not saying I agree, because it's always risky.

Best case: he wanted a proven NFL WR to pair with Smith & Watkins, to help Hurts. Figured he could leverage his issues for a cheaper offer. And then be able to focus on defense in the draft.

Realistic case: since he can't draft, he was going to blow the draft capital and go "Dream Team" trying to add a WR along with a trade offer for Russell Wilson.

This draft in the right hands could solidify the defense for a decade and still add some offensive pieces.

But Howie.

So he better nail it.

I bet if you say it 10,000 more times before the draft it might happen

I don't ever say it because I have low expectations. I just bring people back to reality when they get too excited

LeCharles Bentley, Calvin Ridley, and Frank Gore. Mark Brunnell is probably the QB, right?

It's a piece of news about the Eagles.  This is a website for Eagles news and discussions of it.  Pieces of news get announced and discussed in threads.  I mean, why wouldn't there be a thread?

Because the trade never happened? Therefore he’s not an Eagle? It’s already been discussed in the blog. Eagles supposedly made a big offer for Wilson, no thread made there.

maybe you should start one!

For those of us that check these boards only once a day or several times a week rather than living in the EMB Blog: 2022 Off-Season thread, it is far more efficient to see news items about the Eagles in their own thread.

In the Off-Season blog thread you have to wade through way too much to find news items.  I waded in there last night before starting this thread, scrolling through probably 15 pages of several hundred posts to see if I could find any discussion about the Ridley item.  I never did find any, though I'll take your word that it was in there.  What I did find was dozens and dozens of posts in there about the Sixers game, some about the Flyers, the usual dozens of "Hurts sucks", "No, he's top 15" back and forth, and the inevitable smattering of "How will Lowie blow this draft?" musings.

For a news item like this one about Ridley (or for a genuine news item about an offer for Wilson), I far prefer to see it in a separate thread so I can find it instantly when I come to the site.  The Ridley was certainly newsworthy even if the deal was ultimately not consummated -- for a period of time, it was one of like six items on both CBS' and ESPN's front pages, and it provides insights into the front office's approach to the roster and what they are doing this offseason.

Around the NFL would have been the appropriate forum

I just don't agree.  The news that the Eagles *agreed on the terms of a deal* to trade for Calvin Ridley, is absolutely news about the Eagles that belongs in TATE.  They did not just kick the tires on this deal -- they actually had agreed on compensation (as I understand the article) and the only thing that stopped it from happening was the Falcons discovering the NFL's investigation of Ridley.  Eagles followers have a lot of interest in that news - it shows the Eagles had actually agreed to trade at least a draft pick (maybe one of the three 1st rounders), to pick up an established WR to add to the roster.

Sure, if it was the Giants or Commies in that situation, I would agree that is only very peripherally related to the Eagles and it would belong in Around the NFL, but it wasn't.  It was the Eagles, and they had agreed to terms.
