Given date details of contracts and how it affects plans and timing, futures contracts are a thing with practice squad players.

But why not make post June 1st trades a sure thing and have organizations enter into Futures contracts with each other.

For example, we can't trade Cox until June 2nd, but we can enter into a futures trade contract to trade him to a team at that time and get picks back now. I think it should still be enforceable.

What do you think?

I don't think the team are going to trade Cox. Even if they trade him post June 01 the dead money is still not insignificant and I'm not sure the draft capital would make it worthwhile.

Yeah I agree. Might need a lot to really move the Eagles at this point. Howie’s contracts….

I kind of doubt that can be done.  I have never seen an NFL team do that, and if there were such an option it would certainly have reared its head by now.

Yeah I don’t see the Eagles doing this unless Fletcher says he wants out, and still they would want substantial compensation.

Terrible idea.

So you get a draft pick and then use that draft pick before the player is officially on another team. Then that player gets hurt working out in the offseason, who would be on the hook for that?

It is unfair for the team that traded for him as they never had a chance to do anything with him and then he got hurt. The team that has him used a draft pick for him. If the answer is that they have to give up a draft pick in the following year's draft, that is not fair to either team because it is a different year with different players and the draft pick will be valued differently because it will not be the same number.

Way too many variables and problems that can happen there.

Something on PFT about this exact strategy (but in relation to another player, not Cox).

Why would the NFL want to allow this....all this does is create complications and headaches for everyone.

I don't see the NFL upside.  I see the upside for impatient fans, but not for the actual NFL as a whole organization.

Well, it would help with offseason roster management, given details in contracts. where there's a market, there's a way.

I'm sure there would need to be contingencies in the contract.

Does it?  It doesn't really help much at all.  You're just trying to allow the cart to get ahead of the horse for the sake of making a trade.

Are you saying that someone is willing to trade Cox for a draft pick this year in March, but not in June for a pick the following year.  Perhaps in some circumstances, but the amount of pain to make this worth the hassle would not be worth it as soon as the first trade explodes in someones face.  The clauses that the team picking up the player later, and assuming all the risk would have so many out clauses, they would essentially be able to walk out of the exchange for any reason.  Now you've pissed the player off, etc.

This would turn into a, let me lock up a position I need, unless that position falls to me in the draft, and then I'm walking away.

This just smells of a lot of headache for the NFL for no real upside.  If teams need help with offseason roster management, they should manage better in the onseason.

Maybe there’s a way to essentially do what you’re saying. Most people feel Howie won’t use all three first round picks this year, but maybe he does use them, then gets some high draft picks for next year for Cox, Minshew and Dillard so we have some extra firepower if we need to get a QB next year.
