OFFICIAL: Fletcher Cox Released (UPDATE: Re-signed for 1 yr, $14M)

Featured Replies

Bit of a dick move for the paltry cap money saved, If I was Fletch I'd sign for pretty much any other team at this point.

Also means we have no more June 1st designations (Brooks is designated for the other one I believe), which means Graham is pretty much nailed on to return

Interesting. The Eagles must think he's overpaid and want to restructure the deal. I wonder if there's a market for Cox?

Yeah but the reason his deal is so expensive now is because the clown that just got a 3 year extension asked him to convert salary every year to create cap space

Oh man. End of an era for sure. I hope he stays but won't be surprised if he does not. Maybe Howie already has his sights on Jordan Davis. A true big fastballz 🙂

Jonathan Gannon was at Georgia's pro day, and for good reason. There's three players on that defense that make sense for the Eagles in the first round: Jordan Davis, Travon Walker, and Nakobe Dean.

Time to move on

maybe not.   but, sure, maybe.   Did Walker leapfrog other DEs because he kicked ass at the combine?  He was predicted to be around 28 before the combine.

Maybe he's back on a new deal. Who knows. Wouldn't bother me much either way.

I'd rather he not be on the team, he lacks effort....BIGTIME!!

If they planned to keep him, Howie could have restructured like he usually does. This is a disrespectful move to a long time core player. He already had his issues with them, he will just sign somewhere else.

Several teams have reported interest. There are a lot of teams with money. If he wants to chase another ring I could see him going.

I think Jordan Davis is now our main target for Round 1.  They won’t go light at DT and Milton is still unproven even with some positive signs here and there.

lots of reports and mocks i’ve seen say he did..  hope somehow we can get him but don’t see that happening anymore

well if they saved 16 million it’s worth it not go make something happen

Sure didn't expect that!

But hey if it saves 16M that's a lot. Now I wonder if he comes back, if I really want him back.. Jordan Davis sure looks good now.

If he's not back, will force them to use a 1st on a DT with expectation to be a day 1 starter, instead of taking a DT in another round and have a year to develop.

Created a draft need and will probably miss out on other defensive talent.

But it was going to happen eventually. Maybe this is the year to deal with it.

WTF? Wow. Just wow. Clown show.

Of course...it's the 2023 cap that takes the $15m hit...

do you know what you're talking about?

does anyone here know what they're talking about?

I just went and looked at Spotrac for a half a minute and I think that I have a better grip on what is happening than anyone else here,  but I also think that can't be right.

The Eagles have paid Fletcher Cox a lot of money already.  It hasn't hit the cap yet.

If the Eagles were to have kept Fletcher Cox for 2022,  there would have been an additional big amount of money owed to him.

There is nothing the Eagles can do, or could have done,  to keep the big money they've already paid Cox from hitting the cap in some year.  It appears that the Eagles have already paid Cox about $40 Million in Bonuses.

What the Eagles just did was cut Cox in order to keep from paying him new money to play for the Eagles this year.  The stories say "$18 Million guaranteed if not cut by 4p today".   So,  that $18 Million I'm guessing (because Spotrac made changes already) was new money the Eagles would have been paying him this year.   When a player is cut,  all the bonus money that was thrown onto dummy years gets accelerated onto this year,  or a combo of this year and next.

why they have the guy they drafted in round 3 this past year who showed promise.

To step in and start day 1? Quite a risk. If they like him that much, they'll at least need to draft a DT at some point for depth.

Godzilla is a no brainer if he's there and they'll still have two additional #1s, I've never been a fan of saving one of those #1s for next year.

Getting Jordan Davis and Travon Walker would be awesome.   I haven't looked at mocks since the combine so I don't know where those 2 are now but they both crushed it at the combine.

By not paying Cox this year,  the total cap hit for all the years combined is less by the amount of money they're no longer paying Cox.  But with Cox gone,  there is no cap money in the year 2025.

Many Eagles have contracts like this.  Some teams have no contracts like this.  It's a way to get more talent on the roster right now than you can afford.
