WTF? Wow. Just wow. Clown show.

Please, they're 3 years late as far as I'm concerned, they should have traded when his name was worth something while giving minimal effort.

Numerous teams made calls recently to see if he was available.  No way he returns.  He goes to a team with a chance to win big.  DT is now our top need along with a DE, WR and OG/C, CB, S

Jonathan Gannon was at Georgia's pro day, and for good reason. There's three players on that defense that make sense for the Eagles in the first round: Jordan Davis, Travon Walker, and Nakobe Dean.

Saw Georgia crush U FL this year in Jacksonville.  Their DL dominated.

Regressing for two years.... When you have a limp defensive coordinator, a Cox can only be so strong.

If we're re-working the DL, we won't really be upgrading the Secondary & other spots as much as we could.

Loved Cox - one of my favourite Eagles. Sad to see him released but his play doesn't warrant that salary cap anymore. Wouldn't mind seeing him back on a more reasonable deal if one can be worked out but guess is he chases a 2nd ring with an elite team.

Don't forget Devonte Wyatt - he seems more in the Eagles mold as the ideal DT

Not sure the legality but is it legal for a team to approach the player/agent and say this is what we are gonna do and here is how the new contract will look?

Atleast married men in Philly can sleep easy at night knowing thier wives are safe from the cox.

Then why not just trade him? And get something in return? Or would we be on the hook for his $?

16 more million for Howie to sit on this off-season.

I think two reasons:  1) I don't think they could do the post-June 1 designation if they traded him, so -the cap hit on spent money would have accelerated, and 2) putting him on another roster probably forecloses getting him back at a lower number.

If he's not back, will force them to use a 1st on a DT with expectation to be a day 1 starter, instead of taking a DT in another round and have a year to develop.

Created a draft need and will probably miss out on other defensive talent.

Yes.

On the other hand,  there is now somewhere around $18 Million that they could spend on other players that would have gone to Cox.

On the other hand, if they don't get Cox back,  bonus money already paid to Cox will go onto  the cap in 2022 or 2023 instead of 2024 or 2025.

So many of the Eagles contracts are like this, and apparently,  they're always a mystery to Eagles fans.  Every time something like this happens,  almost no one has any clue what is happening and what it means.

One option for the Eagles,  let's say Safety,   Eagles could just sign a safety,   give him a big bonus,   add some dummy years,  give him a small base salary this year, and his cap hit this year would be fairly small.   The Eagles seem to do something like this more often than not.   Let's say,   4 years,  41 million total.   first year,   1 Million base salary.  Let's give him a 10 Million bonus,  he's happy,  $10 Million right up front.   Let's give him a base salary of 10M in 23,4,5.   Maybe add dummy years, maybe not.  Without dummy years,  there's a cap hit of 3.5 M in 22,  12.5 M in 23,4,5.  Add 1 dummy year,  the cap hit changes slightly.  theres 2 million in 2026,  and the 3.0 M in 22, 12.0 M in 23,4,5.   Next year,  there's a nice base salary of 10 M to restructure and convert to bonus.  1 M base,  and then 9M to cut into 4 chunks of 2.25 M.    It seems like the Eagles do this all the time, and when you suggest to Ravens fans that the Ravens could do this,  they say no.  It's a gamble,  and it might end up biting the Eagles in the ass but it does allow more talent on the team right now.   In the future, it is believed that the cap will be bigger every year,  so, in theory, it should work out.

If the reports are true, the Eagles were getting calls about him. If true, even a 5th round pick would have been better than releasing him. Now he's free to sign with any team that wants him.  People think this is an economic move and the Eagles will resign him. That remains to be seen. Still a stupid move by Howie. Cox is still better than any other DT on the team. There is now a hole on the D Line.

NOPE.

It's possible that Cox's entire stack of bonus money that hasn't hit the cap yet would all hit the cap in 2022.  That's 40 Million dollars.   You don't want a 5th round pick if you have a 40 million cap hit because of it.

Pre-6/1 Trade 2022 Dead Cap: $40,927,760 2022 Cap Savings: $-25,980,940

Good thought. I wonder if we could snag him in the 2nd round and address other positions in the 1st round.

Jordan Davis would definitely require us using one of our firsts, assuming he is still on the board.

It's almost like someof us have been saying this for years.

He is in decline anyway. Replace him with a draft pick, or re-sign him and get this last year out of him, because he is seriously playing some underwhelming ball. TY, Fletch, but time waits for nobody, and it won't wait for you. Let's see what the plan is.

The best Stones song.

Their strategy is interesting and actually pretty smart.

They are basically borrowing a percentage of cap space from the future to use now. Since these dollars are tied to the cap, you are not looking at dollars, but the percentage of cap space in any given year. I think that is where fans get confused because they are looking at dollar values and dead money, but not looking at what percentage of that is against a future cap versus the value of the same amount in the current year.

The gamble is two-fold. The first is that the cap has to continue to go up for the math to work. The second would be pushing a ton of future towards the future for a player that you need to get rid of for any given reason. Both of these happened in 2020. Since 2020 was an outlier of a year against the historical rise of the cap, it is unlikely to happen again, especially with new TV contracts and gambling deals coming in inflating the cap.

The player issue could always happen still, but that can happen to any team at any time.

Fletcher Cox? But I thought this was a family show!

We cut Cox to lower his cap hit so we can trade for Deshaun Watson!!!!

I hope you’re right but I highly doubt it. Unfortunately we'll be going into the season with Hurts the starter again. Any package we can put together has to include Hurts so why would anyone want that bum when Davis Mills is getting better? I think Watson is definitely heading to the Saints.
