March 18, 20223 yr Wonder if this occured with trade on the mind. Maybe Cox wants to go somewhere, and this is how the eagles agreed to do it so it's not so crippling to do so. I'm no cap guy or anything, just a thought

Just wondering if there was some kinda handshake deal that fletch agreed to or Philly would of just kept him. It's not like they saved much from this with lots of risk if they needed him back

On top of that he has incentives in his contract apparently that he can earn back all the money. Kind of a baffling move.
March 19, 20223 yr Still not reported on major sites like the Eagles, NBC or Sportsnet. Makes me wonder.

The only thing being reported at this time is that it is expected that Cox and the Eagles reach agreement on a 1 year deal in the coming days. March 19, 20223 yr So IF the Eagles re-sign Cox on a year 15 million deal as is being reported, is the following right: 1) Eagles still make just over 2 million cap saving this year compared to original contract. 2) Eagles make 15 million cap saving next year 3) Eagles take 18 million cap hit in 2024.

They would have been in a position to have to replace 75% of their defensive backfield which obviously is not ideal. Having at least one vet at each position (S, CB) is a huge help. While they definitely still need to address both in the draft next month with young talent that can be groomed as eventual starters (guessing immediately they will sit behind placeholders like Epps at S and ? at CB), it would be in their best interest to begin looking at successors to both of those vets (especially Harris since he is only signed for the upcoming season).

OTC is showing a dead money hit to the 2023 cap of $15.4M. https://overthecap.com/player/fletcher-cox/1824/

Yeah man either way it removes another albatross of a contract off the books. Johnson is another but at least still playing at a high level. But for how much longer … that is the question. Probably makes sense to do these incrementally.
