Even more reason to make Hurts prove he can improve his passing game to a level needed to be considered legitimate contenders and not adjust the scheme to hide his flaws.  Sneaking in as a 6th/7th seed and getting trounced again does absolutely nothing but put us in a much worse position to get a top QB prospect.  They can't settle for feeling good just to make the playoffs (and subsequently getting smoked) ... that is more frustrating than not making the postseason.

As I posted in the blog, with WR contracts exploding, how can the Eagles justify paying Devonta 20+ million per in a couple of years when he ranks 36th in targets.

Hopefully we get a real QB before he gets a new contract

Yep, without it, he will walk for more money, more than we can justify paying him for his production with Hurts.

As it stands I don’t think this team has improved enough. It’s going to come down to how well they draft and if they have legit replacements at safety, corner, and receiver. The Cowboys have taken a step back and the rest of the NFC East stinks. The Eagles likely make the playoffs again, but I want to see if their young players can take the next step.

If I had to say right now I'd say this team is going to be competitive this year but they'll miss out on the play offs. I don't think right now the roster is really better than last year and as things stand they've not addressed a number of key areas.

Now yes there's the draft and yes they have ammo so I'm sure they'll add to some of those key areas but I just don't trust Howie enough in the early rounds. And so ultimately I think they'll be more or less the same as 2021.

If we can't have a balanced attack, last year will just repeat itself over and over and over again.  In the meantime, we will be picking mid 1st every year.  No man's land.

100% right on the roster..  This schedule is a flip of last year.  We have a ton of easy games early, then have to play ball down the stretch.  That doesn't bode well for playoffs.  And I absolutely loathe the concept of limping into the playoffs and then getting blown out.

Recent history has made your thinking realistic. Let's hope Howie has learned something from last year and can repeat it.

It all hinges on Hurts development......if he continues to improve, the eagles will challenge for the division.....if he improves dramatically, it's anybody's guess.

Don’t get me wrong, because Hurts developing would be a huge help to this team, but the defense giving up 80% completion percentages and well over 300 yards to every quarterback who is good to great will kill any quarterback regardless of how good they are. This is bigger than just Jalen’s development.

Exactly.  That would suck.

We are in a major rebuild. It could take years to recover.

Making the playoffs last year was fools gold.

Probably in the next 2-3 years we will see Lane Johnson, Jason Kelce, Fletcher Cox, Derek Barnett, Brandon Graham depart.

Holes in the secondary at CB and S.

Big question marks at QB and WR.

How many years to fix this team?

The defense can't get off the field.

The offense can't throw the ball.

That’s why I really want to see them use their high picks to address the defense with what surely will be higher rated prospects this year and address QB next year if the need exists.  We are in no worse position to go after a QB next year than we are next week.  Early indicators are it will be a stronger QB class … some will argue that we don’t know if it indeed turns out that way, but we do know this class is underwhelming.  I don’t want any guy … I want THE guy.

Part of the reason why Howie parlayed some picks into the future. This team has a lot of needs and holes to fill over the next few years. Also why Howie didn’t go all in on big trades and these insane contracts for receivers. The Eagles just have too many again players and too many needs to overpay a quarterback or a wide receiver. It won’t be enough.

This feels very much like a make or break season for Jalen, but more than that as @CouchKing wrote this team has a lot of holes to fill. We aren’t a quarterback away from anything anytime soon. Even when we had the quarterback the team basically had a losing record with him since the SB run. Now those guys are old and the team is in dire need of younger developing talent. In a perfect world Hurts makes the jump we all need to se so we can use these picks to further develop the roster. If he doesn’t the Howie probably goes QB hunting, but it won’t be enough regardless.

Now we have people saying we will be competitive but not make the playoffs.... 🤣 How is not making the playoffs competitive?

And that's why I think we will be right around where we were in 2021. I think we are good enough to beat the bad to average teams but not good enough to beat the good teams. Right now I don't think that's changed as we haven't added anything to the offense and we have the same QB. Now that could change after the draft but I don't see us making huge strides in 2022.

Well what I mean by it is that we will be competitive in games. We will beat the bad teams, split with those average teams and lose (but hopefully in a competitive manner unlike in 2021) to those good teams.

I mostly agree......but the QB still remains as the biggest influence on a team's success.  I think the defense will be improved this year if the draft proves productive, the addition of Kizir White, Brandon Graham's return and being more familiar with Gannon's scheme.  Plus they could sign another veteran or two after the draft.

Also, if Hurts improves....the offense should be able to hold the ball more, score more often and give the defense some field position relief and less time on the field.  But it all works together.

IMO, being competitive means you are legitimately "in" most games. Being competitive is not the same as being successful. Last year's team was already competitive. Next year's team needs to be more successful.

Why is it that whenever the eagles do something good and unexpected, that it's fools gold or some kind of mirage?  No wonder philly fans have a ridiculous reputation.

Lat year the eagles went into the season with a new head coach, a new coaching staff, a new starting QB who was basically a rookie.  Coming off a demoralizing 4-11-1 season with new schemes, new players, lost one of their leaders in Graham for the year,  and depending on that young QB, who shouldn't have been starting in the first place, to get the offense to jell.

Sirianni didn't know you can use the RBs more than 10 times in a game until about the 10th game of the season. Defenses typically take 6-8 games to adjust to new schemes.  Most of us saw they got better as the year wore one.....and it wasn't as simple as an "easy" schedule.

Major "rebuilds" take 2 years in the NFL.....it's been proven most recently by the 49ers and the Bengals. The eagles are in a position to take a big step this year depending on Hurts development, the draft and some post draft moves by Roseman.

So while being a negadelphian is certainly normal around here.....the sky is not falling.  The eagles are on the cusp of doing some really good things.  They are going to add major talent this draft and Sirianni and his coaching staff seem much better at developing young players than Pederson & staff did.  There are always some FA opportunities after the draft.

At the end of the year, the offense ranked 14th by NFL stats and 6th in the Aikman efficiency ratings.  The defense was 10th in the NFL and 24th in Aikman ratings.

The point is that they're not nearly as bad as you say.....do they have holes?  Of course, like ANY NFL team does.  But the offseason isn't nearly over.  The draft and having trade assets can change alot of things between now and the regular season......have a little faith.

Oh for the heady days of 2018 - 2019 when backing into the playoffs out of a godawful division meant you had an all pro QB being hampered by the rest of the roster rather than 'giving some people a false sense of where the team is at'

I thought we were 4 or 5 wins at best last year,  this years schedule looks easier than last as it stands right now.  I think we can make the playoffs again. Mostly I'm just looking forward to endless armchair coach threads with video stills of why we aren't running a proper NFL offense all autumn and winter, that's my penance for watching my team win the Superbowl.

We are not running an NFL offense.  The NFL has evolved, it is a passing league, and you need a passing QB to win in the playoffs.

It has been proven time and again, and a gimmicky college run based offense will not win you a title.

We are just inside of 5 months from starting the 2022 season.   We know the bulk of the roster.  We know that we have a nice group of picks in a draft relatively strong at positions of need.  For better or worse, we know Howie has a new contract.

Very little improvement. If at all.
