New Contract Wrinkle Revealed for Eagles QB Jalen Hurts

While everyone debates the future of Jalen Hurts, one thing cannot be overstated: Hurts’ contract is one of the most team-friendly in sports. The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback will earn $1.08 million in base salary for 2022 as part of the four-year rookie deal Hurts inked as a second-round pick in 2020.

That’s an insanely cheap price for a starting quarterback. Hurts ranks No. 53 among all signal-callers for base salary in 2022; and No. 60 in total cash among qualifying quarterbacks. To put that in perspective: a bunch of third-stringers are due more money than Hurts in 2022, including Jeff Driskel, Ryan Griffin, and Josh Johnson.

If you follow Hurts on social media then you know how hard he works out. The 23-year-old is a known gym rat and powerlifter who can bench as much as some defensive linemen. So it’s interesting to see how the Eagles slid workout bonuses of $75,000 (2022) and $100,000 (2023) into his contract. Those are given to players to ensure they take the offseason conditioning program seriously.

Which doesn’t even seem necessary when considering Hurts’ work ethic. Workout bonuses are defined as compensation for attending an agreed-upon percentage of the offseason workouts, per NFL Media, and cannot exceed 84.375% of the team’s scheduled workouts.

"You haven’t seen the very best of us,” Hurts told reporters toward the end of last season. "We’re still waiting for that day when we put it all together and say that we’ve played our best. Until then, we’re always striving for more. I think that’s the definition of what we’re trying to accomplish here.”

Hurts Working Out with AJ Brown

The strong friendship between Hurts and Tennessee Titans receiver AJ Brown isn’t a secret. They have been tight since high school and Hurts even attended Brown’s draft-day party in 2019. There has already been a small campaign — set off by a cryptic message from Hurts — to get Brown fitted for a Kelly green jersey.

Now those rumors are starting back up after Hurts posted an Instagram story showing them working out together (h/t Thomas R. Petersen). Brown wants a new contract from Tennessee but negotiations have stalled. The Titans remain adamant that they have no intention of trading Brown, though. Stay tuned.

Nick Sirianni: ‘This Guy Loves Football’

While those outside the NovaCare Complex might be doubting Hurts, no one inside the building is. Head coach Nick Sirianni has reiterated numerous times this offseason that Hurts is the team’s unquestioned starter. He has been evaluating the tape from 2021 and loves the strides made by Hurts in his first full year as QB1.

"I think that’s common of who Jalen Hurts is as a player and as a quarterback, that he just continues to get better,” Sirianni said on March 2. "Whether that’s from Alabama to Oklahoma or Oklahoma to his first year in the NFL or first year to second year. We just know that progression is going to continue.

"It’s not just because we’ve seen the progression go like that, it’s because of the person that he is. He loves football. This guy loves football and he’s just willing to do the things that he needs to do to get better and that’s why he does continue to get better.”

He's cheap, very very cheap. But he's only cheap for this year and beyond that the team need to make a decision. If they want to give him a new contract then he's not going to be so cheap.

He is signed through 2023 .. .cap hit next year is still only $1.9M

Oh is he? Ah OK but I guess they'd want to negotiate a new contract before the year starts.

Awesome to have a bad player on a cheap contract. Really allows them to overpay mediocre players to fill in the roster

Hopefully, they don't do that.  Once they do, they are stuck with him and the cap hit versus leaving him in another "prove it" year in 2023.  The only problem with that concept is that his trade value would generally be nil in the contract year.  Signing him long term for big $$$ just sounds awful

I love the fact that he's a workout warrior.....but that's not what makes a QB effective.   I would rather he be watching tape after tape analyzing defensive schemes and throwing 300 passes a day at moving targets......improving his release and footwork......

His season hinges on whether he can improve his reads and progressions, speed up his decision making and quickly deliver the ball.

I'll do it for 75% of that amount (guaranteed). Heck, let's be generous, I'll drop it to 50% if a couple of lifetime luxury boxes for the EMB are thrown into the deal.

Obviously the Eagles brass is well aware of this

Do you find your butt gets kissed more with extra likes and responses since you took over the EMB?  😂

lol No, not really. But I tend to stay away from CVON, which I think helps more than anything else. lol

It's only cheap because of his draft position, not because of any actual negotiations. Rookie salaries and the salaries throughout the first contract are determined by the labor contract and slotted accordingly. This article is much ado about absolutely nothing.

The next crop of QB prospects can't get here fast enough. I think Hurts is a really good guy and will prove to be a very good QB2, but this team needs a top shelf QB1 with all the skills and heart necessary to win it all.

Hurts has it all except he's not good at any aspect of passing the ball unfortunately.

(and by good I mean nfl starter quality)

Hard to disagree. He seems a great guy, he's a leader, the players seem to really like him. He works hard and he's a good athlete. But he isn't a great or even very good passer of the football.

Except for accuracy, arm strength and anticipation he has it all

Plus, if he could read a defense, make progressions, and not run off after his first read, he'd be really close... to being average.

Some guys have everything it takes on the outside but not on the inside (no heart). Guys like Hurts are the opposite and lack throwing skills. The Eagles need a guy with both. Maybe next year.

which sets this year up to be tough to watch. Feels like a limbo state. I don't remember a year 2 where the expectations were set so low. Howie really has gotten into the comfort zone of low expectations in a bad dvision
