time2rock Posted May 3, 2022 Posted May 3, 2022 Eagles surprisingly release one of their top backup offensive linemen The Eagles made a surprising move on Monday, agreeing to release backup offensive lineman Nate Herbig, according to NFL Network. Herbig, 23, just signed his restricted free agent tender last week. That meant he was scheduled to make $2.433 million in 2022, but instead he’ll hit the open market free agent. Perhaps the Eagles’ pick of Cam Jurgens in the second round on Friday led to Herbig’s release. While Jurgens is listed as a center, the Eagles insist he has the versatility to also play guard. And if he can, then the Eagles didn’t want to pay Herbig nearly $2.5 million. Herbig joined the Ealges as an undrafted free agent out of Stanford back in 2019. In his three years with the Eagles, Herbig has played in 33 games with 17 starts. In 2021, he played in 16 games with five starts at right guard. He played a total of 481 offensive snaps (46%). Perhaps the Eagles could bring Herbig back at a lower salary if he can’t find a gig elsewhere. But without Herbig the Eagles’ top backup offensive lineman are Jack Driscoll, Sua Opeta, Jurgens, Andre Dillard and Le'Raven Clark. https://www.nbcsports.com/philadelphia/eagles/eagles-release-backup-offensive-lineman-nate-herbig
EaglesAddict Posted May 3, 2022 Posted May 3, 2022 I understand this from Herbig's point of view. Just sucks because I felt comfortable whenever he had to play. Hope Jurgens can actually play Guard (either L or R or both).
Cochis_Calhoun Posted May 4, 2022 Posted May 4, 2022 This is a surprise, remember his first game was flat awful but he was a good depth guy last year, guess they're doing him a solid by giving him plenty of time to catch on somewhere and he's cheaper to cut than Seumalo.
Rob331 Posted May 4, 2022 Posted May 4, 2022 The only surprise was that it was only a week after he signed his free agent tender. Seumalo, Driscoll, and maybe even Jurgens will compete for the starting right guard. Herbig going to compete with Opeta, Awisoka, Anderson, Clark, Toth, and the two new undrafted free agents- Dunkle and Sills for that back up roll. The Eagles are just too deep to pay the 8th or 9th offensive lineman $2+ million. I really dooubt he'll sign somewhere else for as much, but he probably figures at least he can sign with a team where he won't risk getting cut during training camp. Herbig was a solid pro for us and I wish him well.

Seumalo is just an all around better player too ... and more versatile (he kicked out to tackle for a game and held his own). 1
