I still don't understand how the first film is the top grossing movie of all time.

I could poll every single person I know and ask them to name their top 20 favorite movies of all time, and I doubt a single person would mention Avatar.

But, anyway, here's the trailer for Avatar 2....

This is just my opinion, mind you.

I feel like Cameron jumped the shark with Titanic.

Re-watched it recently to have the kids understand the movie prior to a disney world visit, and I thought it still held up well. Was it as amazing as ticket sales suggested? Of course not, because things that are super popular are rarely ever justified for having that level of popularity. It's a half-way decent concept that was ham-fisted into a weakly held together plot, but watching it for that alone is missing the point. The entire thing was a vehicle for bringing the experience of 3D viewing back to theatres after it had largely fallen out of favor. Prior to avatar, there were barely any 3D well-done movies you could go see at a theater and its presence in the home theater space was exactly zero.

So viewing it for what it really was, a super high-budget tech demo with animation effects that will hold up really well even in 2D almost a decade and a half later? Yeah it's a okay movie and I enjoyed rewatching it for the first time since we saw it in the theaters. Am I super excited for a sequel? Not really, but having done the two rides at Disney with a plan to return and do them again, will I take the kids to go see this new one? Yeah we'll still probably watch it in 3D at the theaters.

And that's just it, the cgi and world that was created at the time was all pretty new and incredible to look at. That's usually what I hear when someone brings up avatar and why it made so much money.

I remember I was in college and there was a guy that completely trashed the movie. He watched a cam corder rip that all the colours looked weird. The whole point of Avatar was the theatre experience. I dislike 3D films mainly because I wear glasses to see the screen. This is one that was actually shot with legit 3D cameras and started the fad. Not a scaled thrown together money grab like all those that came after it

The only thing I remember about Avatar was they used their ponytales to rape wild animals

The funny thing is, people at the time said it looked amazing.  I would ask what they liked about it and they said all the colors.  The colors.

The actual new technology that Cameron created was more detailed facial motion capture to get better expressions and emotion from the faces.  That's the new technology he created and it did look good.  But everyone would just talk about the colors and the 3-D creatures in your face.

I actually don't like 3-D movies I find it distracting and the picture itself isn't as clear.  I'd rather just see better images and graphics on the screen.  But everyone insisted you MUST see this movie in 3-D because it's amazing... and it was just some fireflies floating around.  Since everyone pushed for seeing it in 3-D it made more money.

The acting was terrible and the plot was stolen from several other movies.

I don't like 3-D either, actually don't know anyone that does... Weird how it's still a thing. I guess kids are into it

I still don't understand how Chariots of Fire won the Oscar for "Best Picture".

There were some cool 3-D scenes in the movie. I can take it or leave it.

This.

Avatar was so huge because it was a revolutionary 3D experience. It wasn’t a great film, but everyone went to see it because it was a visual spectacle.

The story is predictable, the acting is wooden, but the animation and special effects are incredible.  It goes beyond just the colors. Their water simulation alone is incredible.  If you watch VFX artists react you gain an appreciation for how ahead of their time they were in the special effect industry.

Avatar is the highest grossing film because it was meant to be seen and experienced in theater and primarily in 3D.  And 3D costs more money then standard which inflates its Box Office cut.  It was an event movie that also benefited from not having much competition that allowed it to stay in theaters for months at a time (which is frankly unheard of now).
