Monkeypox 2022

Stupid is funny.

Anyone know what happened with the smallpox vaccine?  Back in the day, IIRC, it was administered differently than other vaccines.  They'd scratch an area in your upper arm or shoulder, and many people have scars showing it.  I seem to remember something later on about shots being given before smallpox was declared eradicated and vaccinations stopped.

I've never heard of a smallpox vaccine being administered subdermally. Maybe overseas that's the case? But domestically, everyone I know that's ever gotten it has that circular scar.

Looks like the national stockpile includes a new version called Jynneos which was granted approval in 2019 and is indeed administered subdermally.

Clinical Guidance

Considerations in Choosing JYNNEOS or ACAM2000 for Primary Vaccination

JYNNEOS involves a replication-deficient virus and has fewer contraindications, no risk for inadvertent inoculation and autoinoculation, and is associated with fewer serious adverse events compared with ACAM2000 (Table 2). In addition, most health care providers have experience with and are comfortable providing vaccines by subcutaneous administration, the route by which JYNNEOS is administered. ACAM2000, on the other hand, is administered percutaneously through a multiple puncture (scarification) technique, through 15 jabs with a stainless steel bifurcated needle that has been dipped into the reconstituted vaccine, a vaccination technique that is unique to orthopoxvirus vaccinations (3). JYNNEOS involves 2 vaccine doses 28 days apart and vaccine protection is not conferred until 2 weeks after receipt of the second dose; ACAM2000 involves 1 dose of vaccine and peak vaccine protection is conferred within 28 days.

Also, anyone who hasn't had a chance to read up on smallpox should take the time to do so. I read a bunch about it during covid lockdown a couple years back and it was F'ing wild how that ish manifested itself. Bet money that if covid produced similar images such as the one below, people wouldn't give a F what was in the vaccine or any potential side effects, they'd be crawling over each other to get it.

Was it like a small vaccine gun?  image.thumb.png.58785cc9002f20d069d85e249a96f6e4.png

No clue, this is all before my time.

The smallpox vaccine holds a live virus. It creates a controlled infection that forces your immune system to defend your body against the virus. The exposure to the virus tends to leave a sore and itchy bump behind. This bump later becomes a larger blister that leaves a permanent scar as it dries up.

Yes, it contains live cowpox IIRC.  We got it before going to Iraq in the military.  Almost everyone develops a scar.

Yes it was. Most people got their smallpox vaccine (along with others) via the gun. That's what produced the large circular scar. I on the other hand had a Doctor who was old even when I got mine way back when, and he preferred lining up the syringes and tapping each rapidly into my skin as he administered the vaccines. The results were I got inoculated but have a much smaller scar. That old guy (Dr. Barthold) made house calls with a black bag right out of  an old timey movie. He was great. He didn't read charts for diagnoses like these guys today. He spent a couple minutes with you, figured it out and you got the right medicine, which he sometimes had on hand.

Ah, the old house call.  An era long gone by.

Need a new name, Orthopoxvirus-Poxviridae, rolls right off the tongue.  Could shorten it to the Oop pox.
