Jalen Hurts dazzles at Friday's practice

If the Jalen Hurts that practiced on Friday is the Jalen Hurts the Eagles get this season it is going to be a very successful year for the team — and an improved year for the passing game.

Yes, it was just 7 v. 7 drills in June, but Hurts was excellent on Friday for the team’s OTA practice that was open to the media, attacking the defense repeatedly down the field with accurate passes.

That was the biggest difference between Hurts on Friday and the Hurts the Eagles got last season — an aggressive willingness to not only attack the defense deep, but combining that attitude with accurate passes.

Hurts had three really nice deep completions, two of which went for long touchdowns.

His first of the day was to DeVonta Smith. Smith got a step on James Bradberry down the right sideline and Hurts hit him with a perfect pass in stride. The completion likely would have been for 40-plus yards in a game.

Hurts’ second long completion went for a touchdown, hitting receiver Deon Cain for a long touchdown over the middle of the field. Cain wasn’t open, as Darius Slay had great coverage on him, but the pass from Hurts was better and lead to a touchdown.

Hurts’ final long completion of the day was once again to Smith — only this time it went for a touchdown. Hurts hit Smith down the left sideline for a long touchdown, putting the ball over the fingertips of the cornerbacks and right into Smith’s hands.

Overall Hurts finished the day 10/11 with two touchdowns and no interceptions.

Obviously a June practice should be put in the proper perspective, but the Eagles had to be encouraged by Hurts long-ball accuracy. The Eagles have the receivers to get behind defenses and win down the field. The duo of Smith and A.J. Brown could be one of the best receiving duos in the NFL. The question is whether they have the quarterback to get them the ball.

On Friday, Hurts looked more than capable of taking advantage of the talented receivers the Eagles have put around him.

Quarterback Stats from Friday:
Jalen Hurts: 10/11, 2 TD, 0 INT
Garnder Minshew: 6/7, 0 TD, 0 INT
Carson Strong: 1/2, 0 TD, 0 INT

Noteable Receiver Stats from Friday:
DeVonta Smith: 3 catches, 3 targets, 1 TD
A.J. Brown: 1 catch, 3 targets
Deon Cane: 2 catches, 2 targets, 1 TD

Looking forward to this upcoming season for a number of reasons - watching to see how the defense comes together and how much improvement Hurts made in his game are atop the list.

I thought he missed twice to AJ. Once he underthrew and AJ told him that if he misses then miss long. He did that also.

I know it is June and just practice but you've got to take some optimism from his. And if he was struggling people would be killing him for that.

Good reports in June are better than ****ty reports.  But it doesn’t move my needle in the slightest.  What he does starting in September is all that matters.

I wouldn't get too hyped up from a report by ESP

I don't agree with a lot of what ESP says but one thing he does very well is tracking the QBs throws. He did it with Wentz when Wentz was here and it was noticeable that Wentz best summer was 2017. A QB playing well in practice doesn't mean he's going to light it up... But a QB playing badly would be a worry.

Don't you dare! The resident know-it-all will surely be displeased.
