Although some NFL teams are permitted to reopen their facilities pending governing state and local regulations, Philadelphia is still in the "red phase" of the state's reopening plan, keeping the "stay-at-home" order intact and enforcing the strictest social-distancing measures to mitigate the spread of coronavirus. The NovaCare Complex (the Eagles practice facility) will remain closed. The Eagles are still chugging along with their virtual offseason program, but head coach Doug Pederson is preparing for the team to start training camp on time. "Because we missed the entire offseason, it's going to take all the five-to-six weeks of training camp that we have to be prepared for the season," Pederson said on a conference call Tuesday. "That's part of training camp. Conditioning the mind, conditioning the body for the physical aspect of the game. "In the spring and summer, it's about the mental side. I do think a full training camp moving forward would prepare you. You have to be smart to get your guys ready and prepared for that opening weekend." One of the biggest hurdles for the Eagles is preparing the rookie class for the upcoming season. Unlike most years, the Eagles do not have an OTA phase to get their 10 draft picks the necessary reps in preparation for training camp. The interaction with the coaches is there, but it's not the same as a face-to-face conversation. Pederson was with the Eagles as a quarterbacks coach in 2011, the last time the league did not have minicamp due to the lockout. The league reached a new collective bargaining agreement by the time training camp started, but it was a different setup than years past. "I think 2011 is a good comparison. Obviously this would be the time of year -- we're in the middle of Phase 2, kind of preparing for Phase 3, the OTA aspect of our offseason. There would be a lot of meeting time with our rookies, trying to get them caught up with our playbook," Pederson said. "We're making do obviously with the virtual setup and the coaches have done a great job of meeting and preparing and getting the guys as close to ready as possible. We do need the grass time to see what these guys can do and see what they have taken from the offseason from a mental standpoint. The Eagles have plenty of rookies that are expected to contribute in 2020, namely wide receivers Jalen Reagor, John Hightower and Quez Watkins and safety K'Von Wallace. Getting those guys up to speed will be vital come July. "That's probably the hardest thing is getting engaged to where the guys are," Pederson said. "As coaches we ask a ton of questions back to them, how much have they regurgitated, understood how much they have put in. It's a time where we can slow things down just a little bit so they do understand and yet -- if we don't ask enough questions, it's hard to get a gauge. "Moving forward, all the precautions, necessary testing and medical data that we have now, we would be able to handle someone if they were able to come down ill at that time," Pederson said. "It would be unfortunate if something like that did happen."
